BUGGY-BODY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,924, dated July 25, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:`

Be it known that I, CHAUNCY M. COUTANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Buggy-Body, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in buggy-bodies, and has special reference to the joint between the side-panel and sill of the body.`

Heretofore it has been difficult to preserve the seam or joint between the buggy-body and sill, in that the said seam or joint when formed by glue was exposed to water and moisture during the operation of Washing the body, which Water or moisture soaking into the joint or seam dissolved the glue and hence caused a separation of the parts, or in other words, a destruction of the joint. Again screws and similar securing-devices were objectionable, and it has become quite a problem to buggy-makers how to avoid the use of such screws, and yet at the same time produce a glue joint that will not be acted uponi or destroyed by the water.

The objects of my invention are 'therefore to overcome the above objections and secure the construction of joint desired,which joint will be so constructed as to exclude moisture and thus preserve the same intact.

Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a sectional view of a portion of a buggy-body, the section being taken through the sill and panel. Fig. 2 is an inner elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional View similar to Fig. l, the parts being separated.

Like numerals of reference' indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The sill 1, usually formed of hard wood, is provided at its outer end and upon its upper side with a rib 2, which rib has an inner convexed face and its outer face flush with the exterior surface of the sill.

The panel 3 of the body hasnits inner face at its lower edge to a depth agreeing with the combined depth of the rib and sill provided with a groove or recess Il, the top of which is slightly undercut to agree with the convexity of the rib 2, as indicated at 5. In the manufacture of the body a coating of glue is applied to the recess et and the parts assembled as shown in Fig. l,in which position they are allowed to dry. It will be seen that a joint thus constructed is preserved against the admission of Water,in that the rib 2 at the side of the sill acts as a water or weather-strip and any little accumulations of moisture .will be prevented from working into the joint by reason of the fact that the rib serves-as awall therearound, and by reason of the further fact that the undercut roof or top of the recess 4 would act to shed the water even if the same gained access, so that the glue is maintained out of contact with the Water and serves the useful function of securing the parts together.

Having described my invention, what I claim is-v The combination with the sill 1 having the rib formed upon its upper side and along its outer edge and its outer face flush with the external surface of the sill, of the panel 3 having its inner facenear its lower edge recessed as at 4, said recess agreeing in length with the combined height ot' the sill and rib and having its upper side or bottom undercut to receive the rib, substantially as specied.
