KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,682, dated July 18, 1893.
Application led October 8, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, MOSES L. HAWKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Knife, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of knives that are provided with fixed handles, and the improvement consists in certain new and useful devices by means of which the knifeshank is braced and supported in such manner as to provide a convenient and serviceable handle for the knife.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a knife .embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the knife shank in full, with the wire support in half section; Fig. 3 shows the wire support bent in the required shape to conform to the shank. Fig. 4 is a side view of the shank and inner portion of the blade. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same enlarged. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the wire support taken from the inner side.
The knife blade, with shank, is formed in one piece and may be stamped from sheet steel with cutting dies used for such purposes. At the heel of the blade proper, a longitudinal pointed projection 2, Figs. 2-4, is formed on each side, the object of which is hereinafter set forth. The shank 1, Figs. 1- 2-4, being of convenient form for a handle is preferably nicked in the margins of the inwardly curved portions so as to form the barbs 3, Figs. 2--4-5, and is supported and braced with a wire having a longitudinal groove 5, extending the entire length. The eX- treme ends of the wire are forked so as to form the pointed shoulders 6, Figs. 26. The Wire is then bent in the required shape, Fig. 3, to conform to the edge of the shank, and with Ithe groove 5, in the inner side which is adapted to receive and inclose the margins of the shank. The bent wire 4, is then adjusted and secured to the shank in the following manner, viz: The knife is held in position by any suitable means, when the open ends of the wire are placed upon each side of the shank so that the edges of the shank will bear within the groove in the` wire. The wire is then driven on the shank until the forked ends of the wire embrace the pointed projections 2, of the blade upon each side, and with the pointed shoulders 6, of the wire bearing under and against the pointed projections of the blade, which effectually prevents the ends of 'the wire from spreading apart or becoming separated from the edge of the shank. The wire is then firmly compressed to the edges, and upon the margins of thevshank, whereby the barbs are firmly embedded within the grooved Wire, by means of which the wire is held permanently and rigidly in place. But if the knife shank be of the required thickness, and the edges will crowd closely into the groove 5, in the wire, then the barbs are not essential and may be omitted as the curved sides of the shank also contribute to prevent a longitudinal or backward displacement of theV wire on the shank, and the edge of the shank being inclosed in the groove in the wire, gives a very iirm bearing and a neat smooth finish, and altogether affording a durable, convenient, and inexpensive handle for a knife or other like implement. The knife shank may have a perforated opening as shown in the draw ings which affords means for hanging up the knife, or it may be without such opening as desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1. In a knife having the blade with shank formed in one piece, the blade having the longitudinal projections 2, with the shank having the barbs 3, or their equivalent in the margin thereof, and a grooved and bent wire permanently secured thereto-substantially as herein described.
2. A knife having a fixed handle consisting of the knife shank formed with inwardly curved sides, and a grooved bent wire extending around the edge of said shank, with the ends forked and bearing against the pointed projections 2, of the blade, and the margin of the shank bearing closely within the groove in the wire, whereby the parts are rigidly connected, and wherein the combined strength of the knife shank and Wire is made available as a durable and convenient handle for the knife, substantially as shown and described.
