' A. B. RHUDE. SELF FASTENING GIANT POWDER CAP. No. 501,440. Patented July 11, 1893.
. Zfil/ms'sas' Jiwefim I fi, I fizorzzo .5, jz/zza de UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO B. RHUDE, OF THOMPSON FALLS, MONTANA, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN SWEENEY, OF SAME PLACE.
SELF-FASTENING GIANT-POWDER CAP.
sPEcIFIcATIoN'formm part of Letters Batent No. 501,440, dated July 11,1893. Application filed November 19, 1892. Serial No. 452,527. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ALONZO B. RHUDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thompson Falls, in the county of'Missoula and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Fastening Giant-Powder Caps; and I do hereby de-' clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
In blasting and other fuses many attempts have been made to provide against accidental slipping or dislodgment of the exploder or cap in which the exploding powder is confined, but for one reason or-- another the desired security has not been provided. Therefore, the object of myinvention isto provide against accident, and to this end I have devised and constructed the cap hereinafter fully described and shown by the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the cap; Fig. 2 a sectional view showing the cap arranged on the end of a fuse with the turned under ends or barbs of the cap in position to penetrate the fuse, and Fig. 3 a modification.
As the use and arrangement of my cap will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains I will state that the body A of the cap is of ordinary construction. The open end thereof is provided with fingers B having their points bent inwardly at a and outwardly at b forming barbs allowing the fuse to be shoved into the caps; but any strain tending to withdraw the fuse causes the barbs or projecting points 1) to be embedded in the fuse and thus secure itself against dislodgment. It being needless to further describe the advantages of a cap, such as I have devised over the common cap now used, I will state that I make no claim to any part of an exploder or cap for blasting, 850., save the penetrating barbs, and I would here have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown as it may be modified in various ways to provide penetrating barbs such as shown at b Fig. 3, of the drawings without departing from the spirit of the invention. This latter it will be observed is formed by making a V shaped cut with point downward and bent inwardly so as to penetrate the fuse by reason of straintending to separate the fuse and cap.
Having thus what I claim as new is p 1. A blasting fuse having a cap, said cap being provided with inwardly projecting barbs, the points of which are bent downwardly to allow free insertion of the fuse and automatically engage it as set forth.
fully described my invention,
2. The combination with a blasting or other fuse, of a cap A, having fingers B, formed by 1 V shapedcuts in the side of the cap; the said fingers being benhinwardlyand downwardly as shown and for thepurpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' ALONZO B. RHUDE. Witnesses:
JOHN SWEENEY, PATRICK WHELAN.
