FAY O. FARIVELL, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE ADAMS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STOVE-BAG K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,412, dated July 11, 1893.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, FAYO. FARWELL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Backs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
, My invention relates to an improved form of hacks for stoves and is of the kind known as extension backs, to be used in connection with different sizes of stoves.
The advantage which I seek to obtain in my improved device is to produce a back which may be used in connection with stoves possessing different sized openings to which the backs are to be applied.
A further advantage of my device consists of producing an extension back which may be enlarged or reduced and kept in position entirely by friction and without the use of bolts, screws, wedges and lugs.
In many other extension backs, where the upper edges project over the oven plate, there is always a space between the oven plate and the projecting edge of the main body of the back and the sections of its wings, through which space ashes, &c., sift between the oven plate and the stove back. To avoid this, I so construct the upper edge of the back that it will present a straight smooth edge along the entire length of the back and its extensions, which rest upon the oven plate, forming an ash tight joint and thus preventing the ashes from sifting in between the fire box and the oven plate.
My invention consists generally in the employment of a main back plate having a flange adapted to fit over the oven plate. The extensions are adapted to be applied upon the ends of this main'plate and to be secured to this main plate by suitable flanges adapted to engage with the flange of the main plate with considerable friction, thus securing the side pieces in any position desired in relation to the main plate. Additional pieces are secured by mortises and tenons to the side pieces adapted to slide up and down to increase or diminish the depth of the back. These bottom pieces are also held inplace by friction between themselves and the side plates and the main body.
For a better comprehension of my invention, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device with the side and bottom plates extended to the fullest extent. Fig.2 is an elevation of the side plates. Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the bottom plates. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 00-30 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line yy of Fig. 1 and Fig. 6 is the same with the plates separated.
In all of the aboveviews like parts are designated by the same letters of reference.
The main plate of the device, A, is of ageneral rectangular shape and is provided with a flange E which is adapted to set upon the oven plate of the stove when the device is attached and is in operation. The peculiar construction of this flange will effectively prevent the ingress of ashes and similar substances between the oven plate and the fire box, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
B and O are the side pieces and are secured in the rear of the main piece A by means of suitable flanges H, H engaging with the flange E of the main plate. The flange H is secured to the pieces 0 and B at a slightly different angle as shown in Fig. 6, than the flange E is secured to the plate A. The flange H being outside of the part G will form, by means of the small flange F, the plate B or G into engagement with the plate A, thus securing the plate B or O in any position. The plates B and O are provided on their inner edges with suitable tenons which engage with mortises J, J of the plates B and C which form the lower extension of the back. It will be noticed that when the wings B and O are in position with their flangesH, H outside of the part 0 of the flange E, the lower end of the small flange F will be parallel with theinner face of the flange H, thus presenting a straight smooth edge of the entire length of the back and the side extensions which project over to rest upon the oven plate, forming a tight joint and preventing all ashes, &o., from sifting between the Oven plate and the fire box.
It will be seen that my device is very simple in construction, will fit stoves of any size, requiring no nuts, bolts, keys or lugs to hold it in position, but all of the parts are held in any required position solely by friction upon each other.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An extension back for fire boxes for stoves,
