Description

' (No Model.) A.'T. SMITH.
GARMENT FASTENING. No. 501,303. Patented July 11, 1893.
UNrrnn STATES,
PATENT 01 nc ALICE-T. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,303, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed March 20, 1893.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALICE T. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in garment fastenings of the class known as hooks and eyes, and particularly to such a fastening of an improved construction for use more especially upon ladies garments which are tight-fitting and the edges of which meet without overlapping. The necessary requirements of fastenings for the purpose stated, are that they shall hold the meeting edges of the garment together so that the edges can not separate to expose the fastenings or the lining of the garment; and to fulfill the requirements stated, the hooks and eyes, first, should be provided with forward attaching loops close to their engaging ends, as well as rear attaching loops, whereby they will distribute the strain over a comparatively large surface of the garment, and hold the edgeportions thereof against curling, or shrinking; second, they should cause the meeting edges to abut without crowding; and, third, they should be capable of being placed so closely together along the meeting edges, as to leave little stretch of the garment material between them, for the reason that the tendency of a tight fitting garment is to so draw upon the garment material as to cause the meeting edges between the fastenin gs to separate. My object is to provide a hook and eye fastening which shall fulfill the above requirements in the manner set forth, and be at the same time of a neat, durable and inexpensive construction.
In the drawings-Figure 1 shows the two parts of my improved fastening enlarged. Fig. 2, is a plan-view of the reverse or under side of the hook-portion; Fig. 3, a broken view showing the fastenings applied to the meeting edges on the inner surface of a garment; and Fig. 4, a section taken on line l of Fig. 3, and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
The eye-portion A of the fastening is made preferably of a single length of metal wire,
Serial No. 466,845. (No model.)
bent to afiord two side bars 15 25, formed with two rear attaching loops t t, two forward attaching loops 1? t and a hook engaging part 25 the attaching loops 1? being between the side-bars. The hook portion B of the fastening, is also made, preferably, of a single length of metal wire, bent to aiford two side bars .5 s and a tongue 3 Both side-bars are bent at theirends to produce rear attaching loops s and the side-bar s is provided, on its inner side adjacent to the eye engaging part of the hook, with an attaching loop 5 The attaching loop .3 is between the side-bars s s and below the center of the tongue; and the sides of the latter are spread apart to a slight extent to admit the passage between them of a needle to facilitate the operation of sewlng the hook at the loop 3 upon a garment. By providing the attaching loops t between the bars t, the eye need be no wider than is necessary to afford a hook-engaging part i of de sired extent; and the eyes may be placed nearer together than were the attaching loops on the outer sides of the side-bars t. The attaching loop 5 serves to hold the hook and garment material together at the meetmg edge of the latter. By having the side bar 3 onlyformed with an attaching loop, and the other side bar 5 comparatively straight, the hook is rendered less liable to elongate under strain than were both side-bars provided with attachingloops. The widening of the tongue, produced by spreading its sides apart, as stated, also gives to the device the character of a safety-hook.
While I prefer to construct the attachment in every particular as shown and described, it may be modified in the matter of details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the claims.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A garment fastening comprising, in combination, a hook A formed with side-bars provided with rear attaching loops and with a single forward attaching loop, consisting of an inwardly bent coil lying between the side bars, and an eye B having side-bars provided with rear attaching loops and with two forward attaching loops upon and'between its side bars, substantially as and forthe purpose eye consisting of an integral piece of wire to set forth. bent to form side bars, having the rear attach- 2. The herein described fastening, comprising loops and having forward attaching loops ing a hook and eye, the hook consisting of an upon and between the side bars, and a hook 5 integral piece of wire bent to form side-bars, engaging part, substantially as described.
having two rear attaching loops and one for- ALICE T. SMITH. ward attaching loop between the side bars, In presence of and. a tongue having an opening coincident B. M. TAUSIG,
with the said forward attaching loop, and the W. N. WILLIAMS.
