SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 501,278, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed August 11.1892
To (05!: whom, it nmy colwel'n:
Be it known that I, EDWARD .lANsEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vall or Ceiling overings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved covering for walls and ceilings.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a wall provided with my improved wall-covering, the ceiling being in section. Fig. 2 is an an enlarged detail'view of a portion of the wall-covering, and Fig. is a Vertical transversc-sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The wall A is finished with boards or plaster in the usual manner and is divided by uprights 0 and horizontal pieces l) into panels of various shapes and sizes. The uprights and the horizontal pieces D are provided with a covering a of rattan braiding or weaving, that is, of pieces of rattan woven with warp and weft in the same manner as ordinary fabrie, or braided in basketinakers style. Said rattan covering a, is formed around said pieces (I and I) or is lappedovcron the inner sides of said pieces.
In thepanels formed bythe uprightsC and the horizontal pieces I), pieces d of rattan weaving 0r braiding are nailed, glued or 0therwiso fastened to the wall forming the base $erial No. 442,832- No models or back of said panels and moldings F are then nailed to the edges of the uprights and horizontal pieces I), so as to cover the joints between the panel fillings 1?, uprights L and horizontal pieces I).
The covering in the different panels, uprights and horizontal pieces may be formed of strips of rattan, willow and other basket materials of different widths and these materials may have different colors, so as to break uniformity. 'lhe ceilings can be finished in the same manner as the walls.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatcnt' l. A wall or eeilbig-covering, composed of bars covered with woven or braided reed, rattan, willow orother basket-materialsand fas tened to the walls or ceilings to form panels and pieces of woven or braided reed or rattan secured to the wall or ceiling in said panels, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a wall or ceiling, of strips or bars on the surfaces of which woven or braided reed or rattan is applied, by which bars panels are formed on the wall or ceiling, pieces of woven or braided reed or rattan fastened to the walls within said panels, and moldings fastened along the edges of said bars and lapping over the panel fillings, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed myname in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
