`I?. RICHTER. TEXTILE GOVBRING FOR WALLS AND OTHER ARTICLES APPLICATION FILED MAY 24,1906.

PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL RICHTER, OF TENAFLY, NEW JERSEY.
TEXTILE COVERING FOR WALLS AND OTHER ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented NOV. 13, 1906.
Application filed May 24, 1906. Serial No. 318,520.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL RICHTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tenafly, Bergen county, State of New Jersey, have invented new and'usefulv Improvements in Textile Coverings for falls and other Articles, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a textile covering more particularly designed for walls, though it may also be used for screens, boxes, bookcovers, and other articles. The covering is composed of burlap or similar coarse textile material; and the object of the invention is to so construct the covering that the sizing or other layer back of such material is not visible through the interstices thereof. To this effect my invention consists in closing such interstices by roughing or felting the textile material at the back, such felted rear face effectively concealing and excluding the backing without in any Way impairing-the woven appearance of the front of the covering.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of my improved covering. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof, showing the facing partly felted and the backing partly removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3, Fig. 2 and Fig. I is a similar section of a modification.
The facing of the covering consists of a Y woven body 5, of burlap or similar coarse textile material, having correspondingly large interstices 6 between the threads. These interstices are closed up at the back of the body 5 by means of a napping-machine or otherwise, so that the jute fibers of the warp and weft threads are here deflected and drawn across or into the interstices. This napped l back 7 constitutes, in effect, an integral felted layer producing a continuous rear face, which, however, does not in any way impair the unfelted or woven appearance of the front face. After the fabric 5 has been felted as described the surface of its back is covered with a layer of sizing 8, which serves to stiifen the body 5. This sizing or backing being applied to the felted surface 7 will not only be entirely concealed, but it will also be prevented from entering the interstices 6. In this way the appearance of the covering is improved, objectionable exudation of the sizing is prevented, and any matching of the backing With the facing rendered unnecessary.
In Fig. 4 there is applied to the felted back 7 in lieu of sizing 8 a paper backing 9 by For the purposes of this invention this paste forms an equivalent of the sizing 8.
What I claim is- 1. A textile Covering provided with a woven front, and an integral felted back, substantially as specified.
2. A textile covering having a woven front, and an integral felted back that closes the interstices of the covering, substantially as specified.
3. A textile covering having a woven front, an integral felted back, and a sizing extending over the surface of the felted back, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at New York city, (Manhattan,) New York, this 23d day of May, 1906.
PAUL RICHTER.
