SMOKE-CONSUMING FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,163, dated .l'uly 11, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to anew and improved furnace for steam boilers the process of consuming the smoke or unconsumed products of combustiontherein and the means employed in connection therewith for consuming said products of combustion escaping from the fuel of the main furnace; and its objectis to economize the use of the fuel and to prevent the formation of smoke, to prevent the escape of the unconsumed products of combustion, and to create a more perfect rate of combustion to increase the heating efficiency of the furnace. I attain these objects by means of the arrangement of furnace shown in the accompanying drawings and illustrating my invention, and in which similar numbers of reference designate like parts throughout the several views.

The furnace consists of the front wall 1. the fire grate 2. the bridge wall 3. the rear or back uptake wall 4.., the intercepting wall 5. intermediate or nearly so between the bridge wall 3. and the rear wall4.,and the side walls 6. which support the boiler 7. A suitable pipe 8. is connected to the dome 9 or any point above the water line of the boiler or it may be connected to another steam pipe having connection with the boiler, and has its opposite end secured to the atomizing nozzle 9, and extends axially with and into the interior of said nozzle with its discharging end at the proper distance from the mouth of the atomizing or reduced end 10. thereof, which position is found by experiment and depends largely on the fluidity and viscosity of the fuel used and the pressure and volume of the steam from the boiler. The fuel, when crude oil or petroleum is used in connection with the atomizer, is conducted from any suitable tank 11 wherein it is stored by a suitable conveying or feed pipe 12. connected to said tank and to the periphery of the nozzle 9. to introduce the fluid into the interior chamber thereof and to surround and to completely cover said steam pipe 8. the heat of which increases the fluidity of the fluid fuel and accelerates the process of atomization.

The opening or mouth 19 of the burner 17. is projected slightly beyond the side wall of the furnace and the reduced or coned end 10, of the nozzle 9. is set to slightly project therein a distance that will form an annular air space between the outer periphery of said coned nozzle 10. of the atomizer and the interior of the mouth 18. of the burner 17 to permit the free flow of the requisite amount of air sufficient to insure ,a maximum rate ofcombustion of the atomized fuel as it is ejected from the openings 19. of theburner I to produce a fierce heat in the combustion chamber 21. to completely consume all gases escaping from the fuel in the furnace.
The process of perfecting the combustion of the gases escaping from the-fuel in the furnace is accomplished by the formation of a concentrated flame in the combustion chamber 21 to the rear of the bridge Wall of the furnace and in a position, to directly contact with the escaping gases, to raise their temperature, and to consume them which process is thoroughly accomplished by means of the apparatus described.
To put the apparatus in operation the valves 13. and 14. are first opened to permit the flow of the steam and the fuel oil to enter the atomizer 9, at the contracted or coned end 10 of which said fuel is atomized by the jet of steam issuing from the mouth of the steam supply pipe 8. and is injected into the burner a high velocity in jets, from the numerous perforations 19. formed in the burner 17. and in a direction contrary to that of the flow of the escaping gases from the furnace, which produces an eddy in the combustion chamber, asshown by the arrows, thereby thoroughly igniting them in said chamber and raising the temperature of the incombustible gases which impart their heat to the interior surface of the boiler tubes through which they pass on their way to the stack where they are carried to the atmosphere.
Having thus described the nature and operation of my invention,what I claim as new and useful, and desire to cover by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is-
1. In asmoke consuming furnace, the combination with the main furnace thereof having a rear bridge-wall of an intercepting wall to the rear of said bridge-wall and forming a combustion chamber, an auxiliary fluid fuel burner horizontally supported in front and near the top of said rear intercepting wall, suitable atomizing apparatus connected to said burner, and means as described for supplying the fuel and steam to said atomizing apparatus, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a smoke consuming furnace, the combination with the main furnace, thereof havin g a rear bridge wall, of an intercepting vertical wall having a forwardly inclined crown, said wall to the rear of said bridge wall, and forming a combustion chamber therewith, a suitable fluid fuel burner within said chamber, and a suitable atomizing nozzle connected to the end of said burner, and means for supplying the atomizing steam and fluid fuel to said nozzle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Inasmoke consuming furnace, the combination with the main furnace thereof having a rear bridge wall, of an intercepting wall having a forwardly inclined crown, said wall to the rear of said bridge wall and forming a combustion chamber therewith, a suitable fluid fuel burner within said chamber, and a suitable atomizing nozzle connected to the end of said burner, and means for supplying the atomizing steam and fluid fuel to said nozzle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
