Description

E. T. GREEN WATER COOLER.
(No Model.)
No. 501,007. Patented July 4, 1093/ v ze WITNESSES: 5
ATTORNEYS. I
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EDWARD T. GREEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
- WATER-COOLER.
SPECIFICATION fOrming part Of Letters Patent NO. 501,007, dated July 4, 1893. Application filed October 4, 1892- Serial No. 447,775. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. GREEN, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Water-Oooler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in water coolers; and the object of my invention is to produce a cooler of simple construction, which is provided with a disinfecting attachment so that when pure water is once placed in the cooler it will be held free from contamination of any kind, either by ice or air, as the ice and water are held in separate chambers and the airis disinfected before being admitted to the cooler.
To this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a cooler provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectionof the disinfecting and filling apparatus on the line 22 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2. r
The water cooler 10 may be of any exterior shape desired, and it is provided in the center with an ice chamber 11 which is closed by a removable cover 12 and which is entirely separate from the water holding portion of the cooler. This portion of the cooler has a hermetically sealed top 13, and opening from it at the bottom is a faucet 14. A pipe 15 leads outward from the bottom of the ice chamber and through the outer wall of the cooler, this pipe having also a faucet 16 and being adapted for use in draining the ice chamber.
On the top of the coolerisafunnel17 which is used in filling the cooler, and this funnel has an annular flange 18 near the bottom which rests upon the top 13, as is best shown in Fig. 3. Extending transversely and through the reduced portion of the funnel and fitting closely within the same, is. a plug or valve 19, having at its outer end a thumb piece or handle 20 by which it may be turned, and this I plug has a transverse bore 21 which, when turned into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 3, opens the funnel, and which when turned into a horizontal position, closes the funnel. The plug has also a vent port 21 opening into the outer air, through which air escapes from the cooler when the latter is filled. The smaller end of the plug or valve 19 is perforated transversely and at right angles to the bore 21, as shown at 22, and this portion of the plug turnsin a casing 23 which has a vertical bore 24 opening downward into the funnel, and the bore at its upperend connects with a pipe 25 leading outward and downward through a cover 26 on a vessel 27 which is arranged at one side of the cooler 10 and is preferably fastened in some way to the side of the cooler. The vessel 27 is partially filled with a liquid disinfectant 28, or is provided with a disinfecting or antiseptic disk to purify the air and the pipe 25 delivers above the disinfectant. Opening through the cover26 is a second pipe 29 which connects with the outer air and the lower end of which extends into the disinfectant and near to the bottom of the vessel 27.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: When thecooler is to be used, the plug 19 is turned so as to open the funnel 17 and this closes the bore 24. The cooler is then filled through the funnel 17 with boiling hot water which is preferably filtered as well as boiled. The plug 20 is then turned so as to close the funnel and open the bore 24, as when the funnel is closed, the bore 22 of the plug registers with the bore24 of the casing 23. When the water in the filter cools, a vacuum -is created in thetop of the cooler and the air flows in to fill the vacuum, the air passing in through the pipe 29 then bubbling up through the disinfectant 28, and finally passing into the cooler through the pipe 25, the bore 22 of the plug, and the bore 24 of the casing 23. It will thus be seen that no possible contamination of the water can take place. water has cooled, the chamber ll'is filled with ice which renders the water cold enough for drinking purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with an air=tight cooler,
After the ICO having a suitable faucet, of atunnel arranged to deliver into the cooler, the funnel having a casing therein with a bore opening downward, a plug or valve arranged in the funnel and adapted to simultaneously close the funnel and open the casing, a disinfectant-contaming vessel arranged adjacent to the cooler, an air pipe leading into the vessel and delivering-into the disinfectant, and a second pipe leading from the vessel above the disinfectant and connecting with the casing in the funnel, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an air-tight cooler having a suitable outlet faucet, of an inlet to the cooler, a disinfectan t-containing vessel arranged adjacent to the cooler, an air pipe leading through the vessel an d delivering into the disinfectant, a second pipe opening from above the disinfectant and adapted to connect with the cooler, and a valve arranged to siinultaneously close the inlet and open the pipe leading from the disinfectant vessel to the cooler, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the air-tight cooler having a suitable outlet faucet and a valve-v EDWARD T. GREEN.
