WILLIAM H. ALBEE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PAPER-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,837, dated July 4, 1893.
Application filed December 5,1892. Serial No. 454,094- (No model.)
cals in general, wherein a handle rod and a binding rod are jointed together at one end and provided with a releasable connection at their other ends, so as to embrace and secure therebetween the back folds of the paper.
My invention comprises novel means for tightly binding the paper folds between the rods, without piercing or injuring the folds, and for quickly adapting the file to paper folds of any thickness; and to the end that my invention may be clearly ascertained, I shallfirst describe in detail the mode in which I practice the invention, and then point out its various features in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a longitudinal view of a paperfile embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the outer end of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is an enlarged view of the inner or handle end of the tile showing a modification, and Fig. 5, is a detail showing the attachment of the rods to the plate.
Like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Both the handle-rod A and the binding rod B of the file herein illustrated are made tubular for the sake of lightness and of polygonal cross-section so as to firmly grip the paper folds O inserted therebetween, without the aid of spikes or other perforators. To further improve the grip on the folds and at the same time save the folds, particularly the ends thereof, from injury, cylindrical clamp-plates D are fixed at their backs to one rod, in this instance the binding rod B, at the ends and middle of the same, so as to tightly embrace the polygonal handle rod A, together with the ends and middle of the folds O.
The outer ends of the handle and binding rods A and B are jointed adj ustably together by means of a transversely slotted plate E, to which one rod, as the handle rod A, is pivoted, and the binding rod B is fastened adjustably by means of a binding screw F riding laterally in the slot of the pivot-plate E, so that the handle and binding rods can be quickly adjusted together or apart at will to suit the folds G of varying thickness- The inner ends of the rods A and B are brought and fastened adjustably together by means of a slotted laterally projecting guide G on one rod, as the handle rod A, in which guide is received and rides a binding screw I-I carried by a rider 1 on the binding rod B, so that the binding rod can be swung toward the handle rod to tightly bind the folds G, whatever their thickness, and by means of the binding screw H, securely locked in such position with respect to the handle rod A. Similarly, the paper may be easily removed on loosening the binding screw II and throwing the rods A and B apart, until the screw H issues from the open end of the slotted guide G.
In the modification represented in Fig. 4, the rider 1 is fastened automatically and adjustably to the guide G, by means of a ratchet K and spring-pawl L, by releasing which pawl therefore the rods may be disengaged and separated as before.
In some instances an ordinary key-lock M, as indicated in Fig. 4, may be provided to lock the pawl L to the ratchet K and hence secure the rods A and B together against tampering and prevent unauthorized removal of the papers.
I claim- 1. In a paper lile, the combination, with the handle and binding rods separable from each other and their connections, of cylindrical clamp-plates fixed at their backs on one rod to embrace the other rod, movable therefrom, substantially as described.
2. In a paper file, the combination, with the handle and binding rods, of a pivot-plate on which the outer end of one rod is hinged and the outer end of the other rod is laterally adjustable, and an adjustable connection between the inner ends of the rods, substantially as described.
3. In apaper file, the combination, with the handle and binding rods, and the adjustable connection between their inner ends, of a slotted plate to which the outer end of one rod is hinged, and a binding screw mounted on the other rod and passing loosely through the slot in said hinging plate, substantially as described.
4. In apaper file, the combination with the handle and binding rods and the connection between their outer ends, of a guide on the inner end of one rod, a rider on the inner end of the other rod, and an adjustable fastening for the rider and guide, substantially as described.
5. A paper file constructed with handle and binding rods, one rod of polygonal cross-section and the other rod carrying cylindricalplates to embrace the same, substantially as described.
