UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ACHILLE WEISSENTHANNER, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
MEANS FOR HERMETICALLY SEALING BOTTLES, JARS, &0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,698, dated July 4, 1893. Application filed January 7, 1893- Serial No. 457,673. (No model.) Patented in France December 19, 1892, No. 210,638.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ACHILLE WEISSENTHAN- NER, a citizen of France, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and use.- ful Improvements in Means for Hermetically Sealing Bottles, Jars, &c., which is fully described in the following specification, and for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France, dated December 19, 1892, No. 210,638.
This invention has relation to means for hermetically sealing or closing bottles, jars or other receptacles for containing preserved food or other similar substances, and consists essentially in a seal or capsule composed of three parts, namely (first) acover; (second) a divided annular securing band, internally screw threaded and having an inwardly projecting flange around its upper edge, which may be made continuous by engaging a tongue formed at one end thereof, into an eye in the other end, and (third) a washer or ring of some suitable elastic or compressible material, such as cork, rubber, &c.
In order to explain the manner in which my invention is or may be carried out, I will describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, by way of illustrating its applicability to jars of two common forms, one having a flanged neck and the other a straight screw-threaded neck, but my invention is of course applicable to other forms of receptacles.
Figure I is aplan view of a jar to which my improvement is applied. Fig. II, is a vertical section through the same. Fig. III is a perspective view of the divided securing band and Fig. IV is a vertical section through a modified form.
In the drawings I represents an annular washer which rests in a recess formed by the contraction of the opening of the jar and supports the horizontal peripheral flange of the cover J. A divided annular securing band K is provided with atongue L which engages in eye M, and is bent over to secure the ends of the band together. The band K is internally screw-threaded and is provided with a flange around its upper edge which engages over the edge of disk J. In this instance the compression of the disk or Washer Iis caused by screwing the securing band down on the neck of the jar. In closures of this character, that is where the rubber ring or washer is compressed by screwing down the securing band upon the threaded neck of the jar, great difficulty is frequently encountered in removing the cover, owing to the tightness of the parts. The difficulty is obviated by the present invention.
To open the jar no matter how tightly the washer is compressed it is only necessary to unhook the tongue and spread the securing band, whereby the same, together with the other parts may be easily removed from the jar. When the neck of the jar is such as shown in Fig. 4., without the contracted opening, forming a recess for the washer, the cover J is made fiat and the washer I extends entirely across the opening, but when the contents of the jar are liable to be injured by contact with the disk J, a thin leaf of tin may be interposed between the same and the contents of the jar.
It is apparent that changes in the construction of myinvention maybe made without departing from the nature and principle thereof.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a closure for receptacles, the combination with the screw-threaded neck thereof, of a compressible sealing washer, and a vertically split screw-threaded securing and compressing-band, said band being provided as described, with a tongue and an eye, whereby the two ends thereof may be drawn together, locked and released, substantially as described.
I11 testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ACI'IILLE W EISSENTI-IANNER.
