ELECTRIC HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,520, dated June 27, 1893.

T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EARL P. WETMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to electric heaters, the primary objects being simplicity and cheapness in construction.
The invention involves the use of an alternating current transformer in which the secondary. coil or circuit is closed upon itself, thus being a transformer in which the secondary coil has but one turn. The invention consists of the special construction of the secondary.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation partiallyin section, of my improved heater, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line as a: of Fig. 1.
This electric heateris a modified form of an alternating current transformer.
Referring to the drawings by letter, a represents a primary coil through which alternating currents flow.
1) represents a cylindrical bunch of iron wire inclosed Within and constituting the core of the primary coil. Surrounding this core and having a coincident axis is a cylinder 0, preferably made of brass, and somewhat larger than the core, so that an annular chamber 0' will be formed between the cylinder and the core. In this chamber a spiral partition d is formed, so that fluid flowing from end to end of the chamber will take a spiral course around the core, and thus be a comparatively long period in contact with the core and cylinder 0. This spiral partition is preferably made of a Wire wound continuously from end to end. The ends of the cylinder are closed by heads 6, e which are threaded upon the outside of the cylinder as shown. These heads are provided with ports f, f, through which water, air, gas or other fluid may pass to and from the spiral chamber 0.
A few of the iron wires in the core are made to project at the ends, as shown at g in Fig. 1, to hold the heads of the cylinder a small distance away from the core, so that a space Wlll be formed in which the fluid from the ports may spread to the spiral chamber around the core.
lVhen alternating currents flow in the primary coil a heavy current is induced in the brass cylinder 0, which being closed upon itself, the current heats to a high temperature. This heat is communicated to the water or gas which flows through the spiral chamber and when thus heated the said water or gas may be used for any purpose. The principal value in this construction is in the facility with which the apparatus may be made, put together or taken apart. It will be seen that the parts are slipped one over the other, and they may be assembled with great facility.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In an electric heater, the combination of a primary coil through which alternating currents flow, a metallic cylinder constituting a secondary coil or circuit inside of the primary, an iron core inside of said cylinder removable heads closing the ends of said cylinder, said heads provided with ports, a chamber being formed between the core and cylinder for the passage of a fluid, for the purpose set forth.
2. In an electric heater, the combination of a primary coil, through which alternating currents flow, a metallic cylinder constituting a secondary coil or circuit inside of the primary, an iron core inside of said cylinder removable heads closing the ends of the said cylinder, said heads provided with ports a chamber being formed between the core and cylinder for the passage of a fluid, and a spiral partition in said chamber for the purpose set forth.
