Description

(No Model.)
L. H. SOHUBERT. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
No. 500,433. Patented June 27, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS II. SCI-IU-BERT, OF INHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,433, dated June 2'7, 1893.
Application filed September 2 9, 1892. Serial No. 447,317- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis H. SOHUBERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at WVheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Instruments and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pandean pipes, or musical instruments which are composed of a series of tubes or pipes connected to each other so as to provide a number of instruments which will give forth a musical scale; and the invention consists in providinga series of pipes which are arranged in the segment of a circle and having plugs and'adjusting means for said plugs whereby the pitch or tone of the pipes can be varied, said adjusting means extending through the plugs.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a plan View of a pandean pipe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through one of the pipes showing my invention applied. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a notched arc, which is attached to the pipes for holding them in position.
A A designate a series of pipes, each being of a difierent length, the mouth portions being arranged in the segment of a circle from which the pipes radiate as shown. Each pipe is provided with a hole or aperture a, and the end of said pipe adjacent to the aperture is partially filled with a plug 1). The ends of the pipes opposite the mouth pieces are provided with plugs 0 having a central aperture which is screw-threaded for the reception of the threaded portion of a rod D, said rod having a head d formed thereon against which a valve c impinges, said valve being held on by a suitable pin 6 which enters an aperture in the head. The outer end of the rod is provided with a suitable handle for turning the same. Thepipesareprovidedwiththeletters of the musical scale, and may also have numbers, as shown.
The pipes are held to each other near the mouth pieces by a segmental strip E having notches or recesses f to receive the pipes, while the outer ends of the pipes are held together by blocks g.
The pipes may be made of tin, wood or other suitable material.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide whistles or musical instruments having pipe bodies with valves which can be moved to and from the mouth piece, and I do not claim such construction; but I am not aware that a musical instrument having a tubularbody and a valve has been constructed with the valve movable in the body by a threaded rod so that a minute adjustment of the valve can be made, and when adjusted the valve will be held in place against accidental displacement, the valves and rods being for the purpose of tuning the pipes.
By means of the adjusting device hereinbefore described the tune or pitch of the pipes may be varied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A musical instrument comprising a plurality of cylinders each having an aperture a, a mouth piece or. plug 1) and an end plughaving a threaded aperture, in combination with the threaded rods D carrying valves 6, the cylinders being arranged in the segment of a circle and held together by frames or supports E g, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a series of pipes or tubes each having an aperture 00 and mouth piece, said pipes being connected to each other to provide a single musical instrument, each pipe having an independently adjustable valve attached to a rod, said rod being threaded and adapted to engage with a plug carried by the outer end of the pipe, substantially as shown.
3. Inapandean pipe or musical instrument,
turn independently of the valve, substantially IO as shown.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS I-I. SOIIUBERT.
