HAND BALlNe-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,425, dated June 27, 1893.
Application tiled February Z7, 1893. Serial No. 463,966. (No model.) v
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, FAIR POSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Monroe and State of Mississippi, have invented` certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Ealing-Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in baling presses, and in the class commonly known as ratchet and grapple bar presses, and my invention aims to produce a hand baling press which shall be simple in construction, and adapted to be operated in a horizontal or in a vertical position.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several.
Figure l, is a perspective view of my baling press with the sides broken away to better illustrate the ratchet and grapple bar in their operative positions. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of a portion thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter A. represents an ordinary baling press.
B is an adjustable wall of the press to allow the pressed bale of hay, or whatever material is to be baled, to be released when baled, said adjustable wall or partition being provided with cleats b, b.
C, C, are braces which surround the press and on one side the braces C are adjustably held in place by interlocking the notches d, d,
thus securely holding the removable side against the pressure of the bale.
E is a trough or guide for the plunger F, said plunger being notched as shown. At any convenient location on the `frame of the press as at G is pivoted a grapple bar made of two parts, the handle H, pivoted to the extensions on the frame of the press, and the engaging dog I, which is pivoted to thc end of the lever I-I, and is provided with a hooked end i and beveled portion i. It will be seen that the dog I will by gravity rest in an engaging p0- sition against the notches of the plunger F, when the press is in a horizontal position, and by lowering the lever, the beveled portion of the dog passes over to the next notch of the plunger.
K, K are pawls which are made of spring steel or other suitable material and are secured to the side walls of the press in such a manner as to lock the notched plunger in its compressing position, and preventing any backward movement of the plunger. By the lever and wedge mechanism M and N, (the lever being pivoted to some iiXed part and working through a slot therein, and the Wedge loeing pivoted to the lever between its pivot and its free end) I provide means for releasing the spring-pawls from engagement with the plunger thus allowing the latter to be moved back by the windlass O, for the reception of hay or other material for a new bale.
The operation of my baling press is very simple and its operation will be readily understood. When the bale of hay is compressed suflciently, and secured by wiring, the pressure is removed, the side wall removed, and the bale released.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with the press having an adjustable wall, of a plunger trough, a notched plunger, a pivoted grapple bar having pivoted handle, and a dog, the spring pawls pivoted within the press to engage the notches of the plunger, and the pivoted horizontal lever and a wedge pivoted thereto to separate said pawls, substantiallyas described.
2. The combination with the press having an adjustable Wall, of a plunger-trough, a notched plunger, a. pivoted grapple bar having pivoted handle, and e dog, the spring pawls pivoted Within the press to engage the notches of the plunger, the pivoted horizontal lever, the wedge pivoted thereto to separate said pawls, the windlass supported in the walls of the press and the rope Wound thereon and connected with the plunger at its in- Io 11er end, substantially as deseribed.
In testimony Whereofl affix my signature iu presence of two Witnesses.
FAIR POSEY.
