SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,360, dated June 27, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY VAN I-IOEVEN- BERGH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and Stateof New York, have invented a new `and useful Device for Ohalking Billiard Cues, of which the following is a specification.

In playing the game of billiards, in which smooth ivory balls are propelled across a horizontal plane surface by being forcibly struck by the convex end of a wooden rod termed a cue, it is necessary at frequent intervals to apply a layer of chalk-dust to the tip of the cue, to prevent the latter from slipping upon the smooth surface of the ball when a stroke is made. Hence a piece of chalk is usually kept in a convenient receptacle underneath or about the billiard table, and the player, holding the cue in one hand and the piece of chalk in the other, applies the chalk to the cue, when required, by rubbing it over the convex end of the cue, which causes abraded particles from the mass of chalk to adhere thereto.

The device which I have invented, enables this Operation to be performed with convenience and facility, and avoids the liability of soiling Of the hands of the player by grasping the chalk.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation, partly in section, of an apparatus embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.

To this socket is pivoted a rotatable arm C, turning freely upon a screw or pin c, inserted in or secured thereto. The chalk-holder D is rigidly fixed upon the extremity of the arm C, and is preferably provided with two or more spring-clips d d which permit the ready insertion of a piece of chalk E of suitable size and shape, and hold the same in place by friction. The mass of chalk E may with advantage be slightly hollowed out in the center of its face as shown at e.

When it is desired to chalk the tip of a cue, the player presses the cue F against the hollow or depression e, as shown in Fig. 1, and then revolves the arm O, together with the chalk E and its holder, through one or more revolutions, as for instance in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2. The tip of the cue is by this means covered uniformly and evenly with a thin layer of chalk-dust, ground or abraded from the face of the mass of chalk E. I claim as my inventionl. The combination of a stationary socket secured to a suitable support, a freely moving arm pivoted to said socket, and a mass of chalk .or like substance, as set forth.
