UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WZ SMITH, OF ENDERS, ARKANSAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,244,dated June 2'7, 1893.
Application filed December 29, 1892- Serial No. 456,670. (No model.)
' To alll whoml it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enders, in the county of Faulkner and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to double shovel plows and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts, but any kind of plow points may be used on the same.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 3, is arearsectional view of Fig. 2, cut through on the line a; :0.
My invention is described as follows:
a, is the long left hand beam having its rear end turned down and forward forming a foot, a.
b, is the short right hand beam having its rear end turned down and forward forming a foot, 1). These beams are provided with handles, c, c, properly braced, but there is no rod extending from one handle to the other as is usually the case with plows. The object of this omission is to allow the handles and beams to play up and down freely independent of each other. Between the front ends of said beams, a and b, is a center piece d, serving the purpose of the draft beam and also as a block to keep the two side beams apart and Said piece, (I, has a also to bear the collar 6.
recess, d, at its rear end and is securely bolted to the inner face of the beam, I). Said piece, (1, has secured to its left hand face and near its rear end a collar, e, having an extension, 6', by means of which it is secured to said piece by bolts or otherwise. The beam a, is loosely pivoted to the front end of the piece d, and passes loosely through the opening in collar, 6, and as the opening in said collar is much longer than said beam is deep, said beam may play freely up and down in said collar. This enables me to plow over irregular ground with great ease and enables me to lift the right or left foot over a root or obstruction without taking the other foot out of the ground, and this construction also enables me to careen the plows to the right or left and thus change the direction of the plow points as easily as a plow having but one plow point may be careened for the same purpose. I may and sometimes do take ofi the beam a, and use one just the length of the beam, 1).
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the beam b; center piece (1, secured to the inner face of said beam; collar e, secured to the under face and near the rear end of said piece d; beam a, playing up and down in said collar, and having its front end pivoted to the front end of the piece (1, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. SMITH.
