J. E. SHERMAN.
VISE.
No. 500,039. Patented June 20, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. SHERMAN, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLARD ENGLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,039, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed December 29,1892. Serial No. 456,686. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Attleborongh, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hand Vises; the object of the same being to provide a vise with a lever having a cam portion which bears against one of the jaws of the vise and head of the bolt so that the jaws can be readily released or brought nearer together to more securely grasp an article placed between said jaws, the end of the lever extending down to provide an additional grasping portion which can be operated by the fingers of the hand that holds the implement; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vise constructed in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 is an edge View. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, taken through the lever and jaw adjacent thereto. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the jaws.
A and A designate the jaws of the vise, which are pivoted to each other and provided with a separating spring a. These jaws are substantially of ordinary construction. One of the jaws, as A, has on its outer side and surrounding the bolt aperture a flat surface against which the thumb-nut G which is screwed on the bolt bears. The other jaw, as A, is provided beneath the head of the bolt and above and below the aperture with convex portions which extend across the jaw, and on each side of the aperture said jaw is convexed as shown.
D designates the lever, which is apertured to fit over the bolt and is adapted to bear against the head of the same. The inner face of this lever is provided on each side of the bolt aperture with a concave e, which when the lever is turned at right angles with the jaw will fit over the convex portions of the same, and when said lever is turned substantially parallel with the jaw the fiat surfaces of the lever above and below the bolt aperture will ride upon the convex portions of the jaw and force said jaw toward the other jaw. The lower end of the lever projects beyond the ends of the jaws A and A and is curved to lit the hand, so that it may be 0perated by the fingers.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a hand vise with a lever having an inclined surface which bears against a pin projecting from the head .of the bolt; also that it is common to provide a bolt with a lever having an eccentric end portion, said lever being pivoted to the bolt so as to bear upon one of the jaws of the vise; and I do not claim such construction, as with my improvement a bolt of ordinary construction is used and the cam faces of the jaw and lever are plain surfaces which will not retain foreign substances which cause undue wear.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hand vise consisting of a pair of jaws, a bolt and nut for binding them together, one of said jaws, adjacent to the head of the bolt, having convex surfaces above and below the aperture through which the bolt passes, of a lever carried by the unthreaded portion of the bolt so as to contact with the head thereof, the opposite face of the lever having portions which contact with the convex surfaces of the jaw when the lever is turned, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a hand-vise, a movable lever D having an aperture through which passes the clamping-bolt B, said lever having adjacent 5 to the head of the bolt a plain face, the opposite face being provided transversely with a concave recess, one of the jaws A of the vise having adjacent to the bolt aperture convex surfaces which lie in or enter the recess in the lever when said lever is turned substantially In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in at right angles with the jaw, the parts being presence of two Witnesses.
organized and combined so that when the lever is positioned otherwise than at right an- JOHN SHERMAN 5 gles with the jaw the clamping jaws of the Witnesses:
vise will be drawn toward each other, for the GEORGE A. ADAMS,
purpose set forth. FRED S. COBB.
