MEANS FOR OPERATING ORGAN-BELLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,009, dated June 20, 1898.
Application filed March 11, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ORIN O. KLOOK and OoLLINs R. STEVENS, both residents of Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Operating Organ- Bellows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in the means for operating the bellows of organs.
In the ordinary constructions of organs it is usual to operate the bellows by means of a hinged foot board connected therewith by a system of levers and cords. This construction is very objectionable owing to inherent defects and it is the object of our invention to remedy the same and provide means whereby the bellows may be operated by a lever, similarto the pedal of an ordinary pianoforte.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of an ordinary reed organ, the front being removed and showing only such parts as are necessary to illustrate our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pedal and its connections detached.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates the organ case and 2 a horizontal board extending across the front thereof and extending from end to end. The rear side of this board is provided with lugs 3, 8 in which is pivoted or journaled an oscillatory shaft 4, provided at its inner end with a pedal 5, which extends through a slot or opening in said board. At its opposite or outer end this shaft is provided with an upwardly extending arm Serial No. 465,637- (No model.)
6, rigidly secured thereto, formed at its up per end with an aperture or hole 7, through which passes a wire link 8, also passing through a lug 9, secured to the lower end of the movable board 10, of a bellows 12.
The numeral 13 designatesaspring for contracting the bellows after it has been expanded by the pedal.
In operation by depressing the treadle the shaft 4 is turned on its journals and the arm 6 is actuated pulling out the lower end of the movable board and expanding the bellows. Upon increasing the pressure the spring returns the movable board to normal position.
It will be noted that the bellows in our invention is arranged vertically and in an inverted position to that of the usual or ordinary constructions, that is to say, the small or delivery end of the bellows is at top while the large end is at the bottom.
We are aware that it is not new to operate an organ bellows by a lever of the first order forming a pedal, and such in itself we do not claim, our invention being limited to the particular construction and combination of parts shown and described by us.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- In an organ, the combination with a vertical bellows, of the horizontal oscillatory shaft, having a forwardly projecting pedal at its inner end, a vertical arm at its outer or opposite end, the link connected with the upper end of said arm and to a lug secured to the lower end of the movable board of the bellows, and a spring for contracting the bellows, substantially as described.
