TRUNK-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,971, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed December 1 1892.
To all whom it 11i/ay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. DAVIS, of Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunk and Valise Fastenings, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myinvention relates to improvements in a class of trunk, boX,or valise fasteniugs, in
which the main lock co-acts with other attachments, and effects a locking adjustment of the latter when the main lock is manipulated to lock it 5 and my invention consists in the peculiar construction `and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged, broken and partly sectional view on the line 2-2 in Fig. 3, of the inner side of the front wall portion of a trunk lid, a trunk body front wall broken and in part, and the improvement on said parts in full and dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of parts of the trunk lid and body and the improvement in a locked condition, on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View of parts on the same line asFig. 3, the locking device being in unlocked condition. Fig. 5 is an enlarged and detached inner side view of the hasp plate and its securing piece to which the hasp is pivoted, taken opposite the arrow 5, in Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a partial transverse section of the trunk body front wall,

The lock proper for the trunk A, of which 0J represents the case, may be of any preferred form in 'a class having a horizontal slide bolt, indicated at b, in Figs. 3 and 4:, the other parts being omitted.
The lock case a, is secured with the interior mechanism, when the latter is in place therein, upon the front wall of the trunk body at the longitudinal center, and near the top edge of the body; said case being located in a Serial No. 453,'7Z. (No model.)

The hasp piece o, is of the usual form, com` lprising an oblong plate of suitable dimensions, and by preference flanged along the edge on the inner surface, to stiften the plate. A bracket plate d, is provided, for an attachment of the hasp piece c, upon the front side of the trunk lid A', two trunnions c', which project Oppositely from the sides of the hasp near its upper edge and which are located in recesses formed in projections c2, on the bracket plate, serving to loosely connect the bracket plate and hasp piece. The bracket plate d, is cut away of a suitable width and height from its lower edge, to allow the hasppiece to vibrate between the projections c2;
the thin keeper plate d', which covers the rel hasp piece to adapt it to retain the trunnions in place and permit a free vibration of the hasp piece outwardly and upwardly.
A recess e, is cut in the front wall of the trunk lid Aabove the case a, for the reception of other features that are part of the improvement and which will presently be described. A rectangular base plate g, is furnished of sufficient area to cover the recess e, and be secured by its overlapping edges zto the side wall of the lid, the bracket plate d, being imposed upon the outer side of the base plate and thereto secured by any preferred means. Two similar iat L-shaped levers h, are pivoted at their angular corners h upon the inner surface of the base plate g, so that their main limbs will-hang pendent and their lateral limbs overlap each other as indicated in Fig. 2. The lapped horizontal limbs of the levers h, are each slotted from their free ends toward the pivots of the levers a proper length,

The slide bars n are of such a proportionate length, as will adapt their outer ends to slide through two supplementary lockingxlevices, which are each formed of a socket, piece o, and a tongue piece o', which are secured in matingpairs at a proper distance fromthe main lockingdevice before described.
Asshown in Figs. 2 and 6, the tongue and f socket pieces are respectively secured` upon,

It will be evident, that by a proper proporvtion of parts, the improvement may be applied to secure the hinged and folding portions of a valise together, locking theulat three points, and requiring the mainlock, toA be unlocked and hasp pieces vibratedither from to release the supplementary locks that are near the endsof the receptacle.
