Definitions

  • An adjustable wrench consisting of a stock having an enlarged end exteriorly threaded for a portion of its length and slotted longitudinally, said longitudinal slot intersecting a second similar slot of less width and depth, a pair of expansible jaws having a common pivot and located within the first named slot from which they project and in which they move, means for holding the jaws in a normally parted position, and an internally threaded sleeve adapted to be screwed upon the threaded portion of the stock and thereby compress the jaws, as set forth.

Patented June 20, 1893.
(N0 Moqe w GRIFFIN &
' ADJUSTABLE 2 Ill UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLARD I-I. GRIFFIN AND ELll/IER P. NICHOLS, OF HENNIKER, NEW
' HAMPSHIRE.
ADJUSTABLE WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,920, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed March 18, 1893. Serial N0. 466,581- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLARD H. GRIFFIN and ELMER P. NIcHoLs, citizens of theUnited States, residing at Henniker, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improve-.
ments in Adjustable WVrenches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention is intended to serve as a substitute for the ordinary socket wrench, the object being to obviate the necessity of providing a different wrench for every different sized nut, which we accomplish by a pair of jaws fitted in the end of a wrench-stock and their novel adjusting mechanism as fully set forth in the following specification and claim and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of same, of which Figure 1. represents a sectional elevation of our improved wrench, Fig. 2. being a section of our improved wrench-stock with a portion of shank in another position, and Fig. 3. is an elevation showing the inner side of one of our improved adjustable jaws.
extends nearly to its outer end,and to this is threaded a sleeve D, the threaded portion d, extending'from one end nearly to the other, the plain portion (1, beingat its outer end. The outside edges of the jaws B, bear against the interior plain portion 01, of the threaded sleeve D, and by rotating said sleeve upon the stock A, the jaws B, are contracted or expanded asmay be required for nuts of various sizes.as shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus affording asimple and economical construction for an adjustable socket wrench.
By means of the concentric grooves a shown in the slotted portion of the stock A, provision is made for the protruding end of a bolt, while its nut is being turned on.
Having described our invention, what we claim is An adjustable wrench consisting of a stock having an enlarged end exteriorly threaded for a portion of its length and slotted longitudinally, said longitudinal slot intersecting a second similar slot of less width and depth, a pair of expansible jaws having a common pivot and located within the first named slot from which they project and in which they move, means for holding the jaws in a normally parted position, and an internally threaded sleeve adapted to be screwed upon the threaded portion of the stock and thereby compress the jaws, as set forth.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLARD H. GRIFFIN. ELMER P. NICHOLS.
