SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,703, dated June 20, 1893.

To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN G. BEERIEN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pouncing-Rolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this-specification.
The herein described invention has reference to certain improvements in pouncing rolls, the object of the invention being to provide a novel means for firmly gripping and securing the ends of a strip of sand paper or other like abrading material and for drawing the same tight upon the surface of the pouncing roll.
The invention therefore consists in the novel arrangement and combinations of parts, such as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for securing the covering upon the pouncing roll, which shall be cheap and simple of construction, and by a simple turn of a collar used in connection with the roll, draws the sand paper, emery paper or cloth, or other abrading material tight and smooth upon the roll.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheets of drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved form of pouncing roll, illustrating in connection therewith an adjusting collar and a gib or binding key, and shown in connection with said improvement is part of the pouncing roll spindle on which the pouncing roll is screwed in its position on a hat pouncing machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the pouncing roll and said adjusting collar, with the gib or key represented in side elevation in position in a longitudinally slotted portion of the pouncing roll. Fig. 3 is an end view of the pouncing roll looking in the direction of arrow to, and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section taken on line as in said Fig. 2, clearly illustrating the manner of holding the sand paper or other abrading material around the surface of the pouncing roll. Fig. 5 is a longitudinalvertical section of the pouncing roll detached from the spindle with the adjusting collar and gib or key removed, to more clearly illustrate the inner construction of said roll, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the gib or key. Fig. 7 is an end view, and Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the adjusting collar. Fig. 9 is a view of a pouncing roll of a slightly modified form of construction, the parts thereof being represented partly in side elevation and partly in section.
Similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views.
The pouncing roll may be of any desired form, either cylindrical, conical or otherwise, and is preferably hollow, as illustrated, in order to render the roll light, and to avoid any unnecessary waste of metal. The roll therefore consists essentially of the shell a provided with a screw-threaded hub a and a screw-threaded hole a both of the threads on the hub a and hole a being left threads. In the upper portion of said shell or pouncing roll a, is formed a longitudinal slot a extending from end to end of the roll. Said shell is formed directly beneath said slotted portion 0. with the under cut portions a and a thereby forming a n-shaped slot, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 4. In the one end of said slotted portion a is formed an incline a and near the hub end of the roll is a second incline 0, As has been stated, the hub a is screw-threaded, whereby the pouncing roll can be secured on the end of a spindle b of any suit-able construction of hat pouncing machine, and the hub a is screwed against the lock nut b or a collar formed directly on said spindle b, as will be understood. Upon said threaded hub a, I screw a suitable adjusting collar 0, which is provided with a coarse thread 0', substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and which thread is preferably cut away as at 0 to permit the entrance of the grooved end of a gib or key upon said thread, as will be described. Said gib or binding key cl, which is preferably made from steel is illustrated more especially in Figs. 2, 4 and 6, and is provided with the slightly flattened upper surface (1 and outwardly inclined surfaces d which in section form a V, substantially as shown in Fig. 4, and when said key is in position in the longitudinal slot a in the pouncing roll, said inclined surfaces 01 can be tightly forced against the inclined surfaces at and a to firmly hold the ends of the sand paper or other abrading material therebetween. On the under side, said key may be provided with a strengthening rib (Z and an incline d is formed at the lower end of said gib or key to ride on the incline a in the slot a and a similar incline d is formed near the opposite end of said key to ride on the incline a of the slot or, while in the end d projecting from said slot a in the pouncing roll, I have formed a groove (1 into which, is fitted the screw thread 0' on the adjusting collar 0, after the end d of the gib or key d has been passed through the opening or cutaway portions 0 in said thread. The strips of sand paper, emery paper or cloth, or other abrading material are applied around the exterior surface of the pouncing roll, and the ends of the abradin g material are forced down into the slot a between the surfaces or and a of the shell a and the inclined surfaces 01 of the key or gib d. The collar 0 is then turned upon the screw-threaded hub a of the shell, thereby causing the thread 0 on the collar 0 to draw the gib or key within the shell a in the direction of arrow y, as will be seen from Fig. 2. Owing to the inclined surfaces a and a in the slot at the key also receives a vertical movement, which causes the ends of the abrading material to be firmly clamped between the upper surfaces of the key, and the under surfaces of the slotted portion u while at the same time the sand paper or other material used is tightly drawn upon the surface of the pouncing roll.
In lieu of the construction of collar illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, &c., I may use the form of collar illustrated in Fig. 9. In this form of construction, the hub a of the roll ais provided with a cam (it and the sleeve 0 is provided with a ring 0 and a cam 0 so that when the sleeve 0 is turned the cams a and c ride on their inclined faces and draw up and tighten the gib or key (1. The faces of said cams may be serrated, as shown in said Fig. 9. Of course it will be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the exact forms of mechanism herein shown for operating the gib or key, as I may use other means for performing this work without departing from the scope of my present invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A pouncing roll, comprising therein, a roll proper, having a longitudinal slot, and inclined surfaces, as a and a at the ends of said slot, combined with a gib or key, having inclined surfaces as d and (1 adapted to fit on said inclined surfaces at the ends of said slot in the roll, and means connected with the end of said gib or key, whereby the same may be caused to move longitudinally of the roll and toward the outer surface thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A pouncing roll, comprising therein, a roll proper having a longitudinal slot, and inclined surfaces, as a and of, at the ends of said slot, combined with a gib or key, having inclined surfaces, as d and 01 adapted to fit on said inclined surfaces at the ends of saidsubstantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A pouncing roll, comprising therein, the roll proper, having the longitudinal slot a provided with the under-cut surfaces a and a, and inclined surfaces at and 0.7 at the ends of said slot, and a screw-threaded hub on said roll, combined with a gib or binding key having a grooved end, said key being n-shaped in cross section and having inclined surfaces (1 and 11 a sleeve on said hub having a screwthread 0' fitting into said grooved end of the gib or key, whereby, when the sleeveis turned, said gib or key moves longitudinally of the roll and toward the outer surface thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
