NILS A. RENSTROM, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES S. STONE, OF SAME PLACE.
ELECTRO-MAGNETIC BLANKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,681, dated June 13, 1893.
v Application filed April 15, 1893.
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NILs A. RENSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha,in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Electro-Wlagnetic Blankets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of this device. Fig. 2, is a central cross section of it. Fig. 3, is a plan view of the electric coil detached. Figs. 4 and 5 are details showing means for closing the open end of the bag or cover.
The object of the present invention is to produce a device that can be used as a blanket to cover or place upon a recumbent invalid, in or with which shall be included or embodied means for conveying an electrical current, whereby the effect of this current in passing shall to some appreciable degree he imparted to the patient and stimulate and energize him; and the novelty in this invention consists in the structure of the several parts and in their combination or organization in a fixed or given form, all as will now be more fully set forth and explained.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A,denotes the wire coil placed in any suitable casing, pocket, bag or covering made of any desired material preferably of cotton, WOOl or some textile substance. The wire coil 13, inside said casing is made thin or fiat and in any desired form or shapeto fit easily into the bag, case or covering A; as now shown this is in form of a rectangle, the intermeshing ribbons 0, serving to retain these wires in place so that the coil will easily preserve its normal position. It is intended that the coil and its cover combined as above stated shall be of suitable size to serve as a blanket to cover or place overthe recumbent patient. Of course there will be such various sizes of this cover or blanket made as will answer for use on couches, lounges, or beds of different sizes. It is also designed to make the coil as thick or thin as desired so Serial No. 470,505. (No model.)
that each blanket may be as heavy or as light as may be needed. In someinstances a very thin coil will answer, in others a very thick one will be needed, and so on through all the range of thick or thin. To one of the free ends of the wire forming this coil is attached a connection wire a, for the positive pole of the battery, and to the other a connection wire a, for negative pole of the battery. A current of any desired intensity or strength will be used according to the needs of the patient being treated. The bag or casing after the introduction of the coil maybe sewed up, or the open end may be provided with strap and buckle d, or lacing strings d, as in Fig. 5, or closed in any desired way or manner.
The uses of this device have been above stated sufficiently full and plain so that they will be readily understood. It is only necessary to add that the blanket has been thoroughly tested in practice and found to be a very excellent device for the purposes for which it is intended.
What I claim is 1. A blanket or a cover for an invalid in which is combined a wire coil having suitable battery connections to secure any desired intensity of electrical current, and a textile pocket or bag to incase said coil, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The within described Wire coil B,having at its respective ends the battery connections a a, combined with the intermeshing ribbons or connections C, and a suitable cover or casing A, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. An electrical blanket or cover for invalids in which are combined a wire coil adapted to be suitably connected with a battery and a case or pocket for the-said coil having means substantially as described to close the opening in said bag, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in' presence of two witnesses. I
NILS A. RENSTROM.
