UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO W. ORAM, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
SOIL-PIPE COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,658, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed September 6, 1892. Serial No. 445,192. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO W. CRAM, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soil-Pipe Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in soil pipe collars: and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved collar for fitting around soil pipes where it is necessary to pass the latter through roofs, thus sealing most effectually the opening made in the roof and preventing the passage of rain or leakage of any kind therethrough.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a pipe and roof showing my improved collar in position. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the collar.
A, represents the roof having an opening therein for the accommodation of the vertical soil pipe B. As it is quite impossible to make a pipe of this nature fit tightly an opening through which it passes, a device has to be provided to prevent leakage. For this purpose I employ a collar 0, which encircles the pipe B, fitting around the same within the opening in the roof as shown. Upon the upper edge of this collar is the outwardly projecting flange D, which rests on the upper surface of the roof and holds the collar in position. At the lower end of the collar is the inwardly extending flange E, making an opening within the collar as near the exterior size of the pipe as possible.
F, represents a sheet of tin or other metal surrounding the pipe and extending out beyond the flange D, so as to prevent any possibility of leakage. The opening in this sheet through which the pipe passes has a flared down edge which extends into the collar between the same and the pipe B. After this sheet has been put in place the packing of oakum or other similar material G, is forced into the cavity around the pipe within the collar, the said packing resting on the lower flange E. Melted lead is then run in on top of the oakum packing which after hardening makes a most durable and complete filling, occupying as it does all the space and effectually preventing any leakage.
By my improved devices the soil pipe is effectually sealed in the opening through the roof and all leakage effectually prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a roof having a pipe opening, a collar within the opening, a pipe extending therethrough, a plate surrounding the pipe, a flange depending therefrom which extends into the collar, and packing material between the said flange and pipe, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
