UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DWIGHT S. CLARK, OF CAMBRIDGE, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. FORBES, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,654, dated J une 13, 1893.
Application filed July 30, 1892.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT S. CLARK, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists of a box made of paper, or card board, or other suitable sheet material, constructed and arranged all substantially as hereinafter fully described reference being had to the accompanying sheets of drawings in which is illustrated a box constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure l, represents in plan view the paper or other sheet material cut into the blank form, previous to being folded and secured together in the box form. Fig. 2, is a central vertical longitudinal section of the box in its closed position. Fig. 3, is a detail central longitudinal section with the box open; Fig. 4, a vertical cross section on line 4 4, Fig.2; Fig. 5, a detail horizontal section of one corner of the box. Figs. 6 and 7 represent in plan view blanks of the two end pieces.
In the drawings A represents abox having a bottom B, sides C, D, ends E, F, and a cover G constructed as follows:
In Fig. l, H represents a blank for the bottom, sides and cover cut from a sheet of paper or card board or other suitable sheet material in which blank B is the bottom, C, D, the sides and G the cover in two parts or flaps J, K, each side C, D, also having a iap L, M, respectively.
Figs. 6 and 7 represent blanks for the two ends E, F, cut from a sheet of paper or card board or other suitable material, each of which has two side flaps Q, R and S, T respectively and two corner connecting pieces U, V, one
at each end. The dotted lines in these fig-v ures, represent the lines of fold or bend of the sheet into box form, and such lines are scored or indented or cut partially through the thickness of the sheet on one side to enable the sheet to be easily folded or bent without injuring or breaking the same.
In putting the box together the sides C, D, are folded or bent upward along their respective lines a, b, and each flap L, M, folded or Serial No. 441.726. (No model.)
bent over on their respective lines f, g, h, m, and the corner pieces U, V, of each e'nd also folded or bent overon their cross lines n, then the flap S, of the end F, is secured to the bottom B, at W, by paste or other suitable adhesive material so that, its line h of fold will be in line with the line r of the bottom, and the ap R of the other end E is secured to the bottom B at Y by paste, its line g of fold being on the line t of the bottom, the two corner pieces U, V, of each end E, F, are then bent or folded up on their lines n, and each secured to the inner side of its respective side by paste, which forms the box proper, the flaps L, M, of the sides and liaps Q, S, of the ends extending and laying over the box horizontally. Each flap J, K, of the bottom piece is then folded or bent up along the line fr, t, and u, o, at each end and the side flaps L, M, along the lines d, e, and the portions Z, A are secured to the outer side of its respective end E or F by paste, the two flaps J, K being folded over the top of the box, covering it, as shown in Fig. 2, in section, the two iaps being of a length to overlap each other a short distance as shown in said figure.
In Fig. l is indicated in dotted lines the positions of the two end pieces E, F, on the blank EI.
To the inner side of the bottom B, each side C, D, and each end E, F, is secured by paste, stiffening or strengthening pieces B', preferably of thicker paper or card board which pieces are sufficiently short and narrow to allow the blanks H, N and P to be folded or bent freely along their lines as described. On the sides these strips B are secured over the corner pieces U, V, of the ends doubly securing the corners.
Any suitable paste or adhesive material can be used to secure the parts together.
In opening the box to display the goods therein the cover iaps are turned back at each end, they bending back on the lines a, fc.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A box of paper, or card board, or other suitable sheet material, its bottom, sides and cover being made of one pieceand folded to make their respective parts, each side having IOO a side iap to fold over the box, the ends each having two side flaps, and two supplemental corner pieces, one Hap of each end being secured to the inner side of the bottom portion, and the other extending over the box, each corner piece of each end secured to the inner side of the side of the box next thereto, each end of the bottom piece being folded over, and secured to the outside of the end of the box, and extending over the top of the box to form the cover.
2. A box of paper, or card board, or other suitable sheet material, its bottom, sides and cover being made of one piece and folded to make their respective parts, each side having a side Iiap to fold over the box, the ends eaoh having two side iiaps, and two supplemental corner pieces, one fiap of each end being secured to the inner side of the bottom portion, and the other extending over the box, each corner piece of each end secured to the inner side of the side of the box next thereto, each end of the bottom piece being folded over, and secured to the outside of the end of the box, and extending` over the top of the box to form the cover, and the bottom, sides, and ends having strengthening or stiffening pieces secured to their respective inner sides.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DWIGHT S. CLARK.
