STAPLE BXTRAGTOR. No. 499,637. Patented June 3, 1893.
YNE nonms Prrcns 00.. FNOTO-LITNQ. WASHINGTON u c UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE HARRISON T. KNIGHT, OF MILAN, MISSOURI; NANNIE KNIGHT EXEOUTRIX OF SAID HARRISON T. KNIGHT, DECEASED.
STAPLE-EXTRACTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,637, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed May 27, 1892. Serial No. 434,652. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRISON T. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milan, in the county of Sullivan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Staple-Extractor, of which the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
I will first describe my improvement with reference to the accompanying drawings and then more particularly define the novel fea-- tures in the accompanying claim.
In said drawings, Figure I is a side elevation of my improved staple extractor representing the jaws in closed position, the operating handles being broken away. Fig. II is a side elevation taken from the reverse side of the staple extractor and representing the jaws in slightly open position. Fig. III is a detail front edge View. Fig. IV is a top sectional view taken on the line IV-IV Figs. I and II. Fig. V is a top sectional view of the main extracting lever taken on the line VV Fig. II.
1 is the upright main lever formed with the operating handle 2 and the lower enlarged fulcrum foot 3 extending approximately at right angles from and located in the same plane as the handle portion 2 and having a lower semicircular working face 4 upon which it is adapted to be rocked in the operation of withdrawing a staple.
5 is a tapering claw formed integrally with and extending from the fulcrum foot 3, and 6 is a curved recess forming the inner face of the tapering claw.
7 is an enlarged or extended portion projecting from the inner side of the fulcrum foot and having an upper serrated squared edge 8 which is flush with the serrated face 9 of the fulcrum foot. Adjacent to this serrated face 9 is formed the elevated cutting edge 10 which extends to the handle portion 2 of the lever.
11 is the upright co-operating lever pivoted at 12 to the main lever 1 above the lower ful= crum foot and formed with the upper handle portion 13 and the upper curved jaw 14. This jaw 14 is curved in two directions to render it of proper shape. It extends approximately at right angles to the handle portion, is located in the same plane as the latter, and is parallel to the fulcrum foot 3 of the lever 1 and the extreme end of the jaw is curved inwardly and downwardly at 15 and formed with a thin broad operating nose 16 which is overlapped by the claw and rests normally within the outer end of the recess 6. The outer portion of the recess 6 and the outer face of the broad nose 16 are formed approximately concentric with the pivot 12, so as to render the two co-operative. The lower curved edge of the lever 11 is beveled off at 17 to form a Wire cutting edge which co-operates with the cutting edge 10.
18 is a squared recess in the lower face of the lever 11 adapted to fit over the enlarged portion 7 of the fulcrum foot 3, the face of said recess being serrated to form a gripping aw.
19, is a shoulder formed by the projecting nose 16.
It will be observed in operating with my improved tool that the claw 5 is placed beneath the eye of the staple and the lovers braced together so that the broad thin nose 16 will come against-the opposite face of the staple and force it onto the claw, when the tool is rocked on its curved fulcrum foot and the staple withdrawn and removed from the tool. By this arrangement the staple is easily and quickly withdrawn without bending or breaking and can be preserved for future use. By arranging the gripping jaws or pinchers and the cutting edges farthest away from the operating handles power is gained so that the tool is made more effective.
Having thus fully described my invention,
the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A staple-extractor comprising an upright main lever formed with an enlarged lower fulcrum foot, extending approximately at right angles to the main lever and working in the same vertical plane, having a lower semicircular working face and a tapering claw extending upwardly from the fulcrum-foot, and the upright co-operating lever, pivoted to the main lever above the fulcrum-foot and Wardly over the fulcrum-foot and formed with formed with an upper curved jaw extending 'a thin broad projecting nose; substantially as approximately at right angles to and in the described.
same vertical plane as the co-operating lever HARRISON. T. KNIGHT. 5 and parallel to, and alongside of, and in the Witnesses:
same direction as, the fulcrum-foot, having E. B. LANE,
its extreme end curved inwardly and down- D. H. SHOLTUS.
