To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRAM Z. MERRIAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitewater, in the county of Walworth and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Damper-Regulators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in damper regulators or devices by which the dampers or valves of a heating furnace may be adjusted from various parts of the house to which it is applied, and it consists of a pcculiar construction and arrangement of belt and pulley mechanism more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a diagrammatical view of a hot air furnace equipped with my improve ments, and Fig. 2, a detail view of one of the pulleys used in my invention.
The reference letter a represents an ordinary hot-air furnace having the cold-air or feed-duct b, and hot-air pipes c c, all of which are of the usual or any preferred construction.
e,e' represents the respective dampers of the pipes c o to each shank or spindle of which is immovably secured the grooved pulleys, d 01'. Over these pulleys a belt f f passes, thence over the pulleys or guides f located at every point where a turn in the belt is made, and finally over the pulleys g g, located in some convenient place where easy access may be had, by the occupants of the house. The pulleys g g, are also grooved and journaled on short shafts or trunnions h. These arein turn immovably fixed to the vertically extending base-board h, which I shall hereinafter term the switch board. The switch-board h is secured against the wall of the room in which it is located and provided with a third pulley z' of a construction similar to that of the pulleys g and g. Running over the pulley 2', is a belt j, one
end of which is connected to the swinging lid is of the cold-air duct and the other end to the damper or draft-door 70. These connections are so made that when the door is is opened lid is will be closed and vice versa.
Fixed to each of the pulleys on the switchboard It, is an indicator 1. By means of this arrangement the condition of the dampers can be ascertained immediately. For example, the belts and pulleys may be adjusted so that when the'damper in the hot-air pipes is opened, the indicator on the pulleys g g will be horizontal, and when closed the indicator will register vertical. This manner of indicating the condition of the dampers is used also in connection with the door 7.; and lid is. It will be essential to the successful operation of the invention that the pulleys on both the dampers and switch-board be provided with means to prevent the belts from slipping, as it is obvious if the belts slip, the adjustment of the indicators as described above, will be destroyed and disastrous results will follow. To this end I form in the groove of each pulley having a sharply defined depression or recess 'm fixed therein, and extending across the path of the belt, a bar at. The belt is passed in the depression under the bar, thence around the pulley as usual. By this arrangement all slipping of the belt is stopped and the perfect operation of the invention insured.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that the particular arrangement herein described is not essential to the device and that various changes could be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. For example: a switch board, with its appliances, could be located in every or any of the rooms of the house, or that pulleys having control over the hot-air duct leading to a certain room,be placed in such room and the other rooms similarly fitted. On the other hand I wish to say that no claim is made to the arrangement for operating the door 70, and lid is, as this is conceded to be old and well known.
What I do claim, however, and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is
