SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,380, dated June 13, 1893.

Be it known that I, HENRY FRANZ, a citizen Kings county, New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Graphoscopes, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates to an improved graphoscope which is intended for the use of children and with which a large number of photographic pictures can be supplied at a comparatively small price and applied into the frame of the graphoscope so as to furnish vention consists of a graphoscope formed of a cylindrical lens frame, a longitudinal rod attached to the lens frame and a pictureholder that is adjusted by means of a guide slot and friction spring on the rod, said picture holder being provided with open edges so as to hold the picture inserted in the same.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved graphoscope. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a front-view of the picture holder partly in section, on the line 3 3, Fig. 2 showing its connection with the supporting rod.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a lens frame, which is made of sheet metal, pasteboard or other suitable material and preferably composed of two detachable parts A A between which the lens'B is held. Upon detaching the two telescoping sections of the frame A the lens B can be removed and cleaned. The two telescoping sections of the lens frame are held together by friction, the outer one having a circumferential flange for retaining the lens B in position.

' To the inner section of the lens frame A is attached a supporting rod 0, on which is supported a picture holder D, which is formed of a sheet metal or other plate that is provided with bent flanges at its sides which serve as guides-for the picture. of the picture holder D is arranged a slot d, through which passes the supporting rod 0, the slot permitting the adjusting of the picture holder on the rod 0. A flat spring E is soldered or otherwise attached to the lower part ofothepicture holder below the guide slot cl of the same, so that the ends of the spring E bear on the under side of the rod 0, and retain the picture holder in position on the rod E.

When it is desired to look at a picture, the same is inserted into the picture holder until it rests on the supporting rod 0. The picture holder is then placed in focus by sliding the same forward or backward on the supporting red. A number of pictures representing views of natural scenery, Chicago Exhibition buildings, prominent buildings and monuments of other cities, 850., can be supplied with the graphoscope, which is made on a small scale so as to be adapted for the use of children, to whom it furnishes a very entertaining and instructive toy, and at the same time gives a pleasant recollection of different cities and countries visited.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a graphoscope, the combination of a supporting rod, a lens frame composed of two telescoping sections, the inner section being fixed to said supporting rod and the outer section sliding over the inner section, the outer end of said outer section being provided with an inward flange, a detachable lens clamped between the outer end of the inner
