Description

(No Model.) I
E. COON.
ASH SIFTER. v No 499,282. Patented June 13, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMETT OOON, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
ASH-SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,282, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed March 25, 1893- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMMETT CooN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ann Arbor, WVashtenaw county, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This improvement relates to that class of ash-sifters provided with a removable sieve hung on a swinging frame operated by a lever, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and then definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a plan of a sifter constructed according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same when the sifter is in action. Fig. 3 shows a similar section when the cinders and unburned coal are about to be discharged.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by 1etter-A represents a box having a drawer B in its bottom and provided with a door 0 hinged at c, and a knob D by which it may be fastened, either in an open or closed position, by hooks E.
At F is shown a cover which is hinged at G (see Fig. 3).
A frame H is hung by links I in the box A, and upon this frame is supported the sieve J, which may be of any convenient form or material, but preferably square or oblong.
Pivoted to an arm K, extending from the end of the box, is a lever L, connected to the frame H by a link or pitman M passing through the end of the box. On the end of the sieve opposite the lever is a broad spout N, whose object will be more fully hereinafter explained.
The operation is as follows: The top or cover F of the box is opened and set against an upright O on the side of the box, when the mixed ashes and cinders are dropped into the sieve J, and then the cover F is closed down tightly, after which the lever is vibrated a few times and thus the ashes are quickly sifted out of the cinders and unburned coals Serial No. 467,539. (No model.)
and pass through the bottom of the sieve into the drawer B, from whence they can be readily removed by withdrawing said drawer from the box through the door 0 which should be opened for that purpose, and may be fastened open by the upper hook E, when desired. When it is desired to remove the cinders, &o., from the sieve, the lever L is pushed as far as possible to the right, which will lift the spout N upon the opposite end a of the box A, when by lifting the left hand end of the sieve, the cinders, 850., will pass out through the spout into any receptacle placed to receive them. By this means the ashes may be quickly sifted and the cinders separated therefrom by the merest child and without creating any dust or dirt. In order to prevent the spout N striking against the top of the box when 1t is closed, the lever is so arranged as to come in contact with the end of the top of the box, when it is down, but when the top is open the lever can be given greater motion, as shown in Fig. 3.
In some cases I may use an additlonal screen as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, by which the cinders may be separated into two sizes, which will also make it more convenlent in separating clinkers as they will generally remain in the upper sieve.
What I claim as new is- 1. The combination with the box A, of the swinging frame H, lever L, connected to the frame, and sieve J, having spout N arranged to bear on the edge of the box, substantlally as described.
2. The combination with the box A, of the sieve J having spout N the frame H, links I supporting said frame and arranged to swing the spout over the edge of the box, lever L, pitman M connecting the frame and lever, and the cover of the box A constructed to form a stop for the lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
.in presence of two witnesses, this 23d day of March, 1893.
EMMETT OOON. Witnesses:
JAMES KEARNS,
FRED. A. HOWLETT.
