WILLIAM B. DRAPER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUCKLE AND CAST-OFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,214, dated June 13, 1893.
' Application filed January 3, 1893. Serial no. 467,082. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. DRAPER, of Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in a Buckle and Cast-01f, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. Y
This invention has for its object to constructa simple and efficient buckle and castoff for suspenders and other devices.
My invention has for its further object to provide a cast-0E, and my invention consists in various details of construction to be hereinafter pointed out. I
Figure 1, shows in front elevation a buckle and cast-off embodying this invention; Fig.
. 2, a rear side view of the buckle and cast-off shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the buckle and cast-01f taken on the dotted line w-w; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the'cast-oif Fig. 5, a frontelevation of a modified form of cast-oft; Fig. 6, a vertical section of the cast-off shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7, a rear side view of the cast-off shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 8, a front elevation of a modified form of castplf, and Fig. 9, a rear side View of the cast-oft shown in Fig. 8. i Y
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, the buckle consists of a piece of wire bent to present parallel bars a, b, the ends of which are connected by inwardly bent portions or loops 0, 0, thereby .presenting two slots or passages d, e, for the web, separated by the loops 0, 0. These loops are connected by a short bare, and the Web passes through the slots or passages d, 6, over the loops 0, c, and cross-bar c. The web holdin g device consists of a cross-bar f, of suitable length to enter the slot or passage e, and is supported 'pivotally on the upper wires of the loops 0, 0, thereby bearing against the lower wires of said loops when pressed into the slot or passage e, as it will be whenbrought into engagement with the web. The lower edge of this bar is or may be toothed or serrated. Springs encircle the upper wires of the loops 0, 0, being connected with said web holder, and tending to close it in upon the material. The web g, passes through the slot or passage d, as shown in Fig. 3, thence over the loops 0, c, and cross-bar c, and back through the slot or passage 6, and when adjusted therein as desired the toothed cross-bar or web holder f is pressed intothe slot or passage e, the toothed edge compressing the Web upon or against the lower bar 6 of the buckle. When so held it is very secure, yet by simply pulling down upon the lower end of the web it may be easily drawn down, the holder f, moving rearwardly at such time, after which it may be replaced. v
The buckle, instead of being composed of wire'as hereinv shown may be formed of sheet metal if desired, and the loops 0, 0, may be made to project toward each other a greater or less distance, and when projecting sufficiently the cross-bar 0' may be omitted, and furthermore if desired the upper bar a, may be omitted. Y
The cast-oft is herein represented as connected to or supported upon the bar b, of the buckle, but it is obvious that it maybe otherwise supported and at any other desired point. This cast-0E consists essentially of two plates m, and n. The plate m, is made tapering toward its lower end and the side edges thereof are turned over to present guideways, and
the plate 12 is likewise made tapering toward its lower end and adapted to fit the guideways in the plate m. Any suitable slotted plate,
such as 0, or plate of other form or construction, may depend from the plate 12. to which the suspender end may be attached or any other suitable part. To prevent the part at, from too easily disengaging the part m I have provided upon its rear side an upwardly extended projection n which when in position is located at the rear side of the plate m, and a finger piece n may be provided which is pivoted to the plate m and adapted to lap over the projection 12.. By referring to Figs.
5 to 7, inclusive, the rear projection 47. is
longer and wider, and hence the finger piece n is omitted. In this instance however the slotted. plate is formed integral with the plate 'm. By referring to Figs. 8 and 9, it will be seen that the plate m is slotted at its lower end to present the spring acting tongue, and
the plate 12 is provided with a small projection which passes by or over the end of said tongue, and thereby accomplishes the above specified results. Hence it will be understood that I do not desire to limit myself to any particular IOO.
form or construction of retaining or locking device for the plate 11, nor in fact to the employment of such adevice as said plate m and it, may be constructed with such proportions as to obviate the necessity of such a device, and in some instances also it will be unnecessary.
I claim 1. Acombined buckle and cast-off comprising the following elements in combination, the parallel bars a, b, the intermediate inwardly turned loops 0, c, presenting slots or passages d, e for the web, the cross bar toothed at its lower edge and pivotally connected to the upper wire of the loops 0, c, and adapted to enter the passage e and hold the web between its lower toothed edge and the bar I), the tapering plate m connected at its upper end to the bar I), and having overturned sides, the tapering plate n adapted to enter between and be supported by'the overturned sides of the plate m and having at its lower end a web supporting device, substantially as described. 7
2. In a combined buckle and cast-01f, the combination with thelower portion of abuckle, of a cast-oft comprising the tapering plate m provided with means at its upper end for connecting it to the buckle, and having overturned sides, and the tapering plate n adapted to enter between and besupported by the overturned sides of said plate m and having at its lowerend a web supporting device, substantially as described.
3. In a combined buckle and cast-0E, the combination with the lower portion of abuckle, of a cast-oft comprising the tapering plate m provided with means at its upper end for connecting it to the buckle, and having overturned sides, the plate a adapted to enter between and be supported by the overturned sides of said plate m, and having at its lower end a web supporting device, and a locking device to securely hold the plate at in its position, consisting of two plates adapted to engage each other, one carried by the web supporting device and the other by the cast-off, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed m name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM B. DRAPER.
