H. AHLSTRAND. MUSIC LEAF TURNER.
No. 499,195. Patented June 18, 1893.
ms ucnms PETERS co. PHoroumQ, msumomu. a! c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO AHLSTRAND, OF EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
M U SIC-LEAF TU RN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,195, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed January 28, 1893. Serial No. 460,014. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO AHLSTRAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in music leaf turners for the purpose of rapidly turning over the leaves of sheet or book music while performing on any musical instrument and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, Wherein Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention, showing it in position for use. Fig. 2 representsa side elevation. Fig. 3 represents a top plan view. Fig. 4. represents a bottom plan view. Fig. 5 represents a crosssection on the line 55 shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whereever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings A represents an angular rack or music support adapt-ed to be temporarily or permanently secured to the music supporting device or standard as may be desired. To said rack is secured a spindle B on which the folder arms or leaf turners O, O, are loosely pivoted as shown. Each such folder arm has in its outer end, a forked projection 0 adapted to receive the lower edge of one of the sheets F that is to be turned over.
On the spindle B is loosely journaled the wheel or grooved pulley D to which is attached one end of a coiled spring E, the other end of which is attached to the stationary spindle B or other stationary part of the device, and said spring serves for the purpose of automatically returning the wheel D to the normal position shown in Fig. 1 after it has been moved in the direction shown by arrow in said figure.
The wheel D is retained in its normal position by means of apin d on said wheel coming in contact with a metal plate or bar a secured in front of and at a suitable distance from the rack A.
To the periphery of the wheel D is secured a cord or wire D which passes loosely through a perforated stationary guide a as shown in Fig. 1, for a purpose as will hereinafter be described.
On the rear of the wheel D is loosely pivoted a hooked pawl G as shown in the drawings. Each of the leaf turners O is provided with a lip or side projection C as shown; the lip O on the uppermost turning arm is arranged at a greater distance from the pivot on which said arms swing than the next one in the series and so on as fully shown in Figs. 2 and 3 so as to cause the hooked pawl G to pick up only one of the turning arms at a time during the rotation of the wheel D.
The operation is as follows: WVe will suppose that all the turning arms are swung to the right and that each arm is connected to a sheet F by means of the forked ends C. By pulling on the cord D the Wheel D is caused to turn in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 until the hooked pawl G hooks onto the lip O on the uppermost folder arm C. By letting go the cord D, the spring E causes the wheel D to be returned to its normal position shown in Fig. 1 and during such movement the folder arm that is held by the hooked pawl G is swung from the right to the left with the sheet connected to it, thus automatically turning over said sheet as fully represented in Fig. 1. By repeating the operation sheet after sheet may be turned from right to left and this can be done by pulling by hand or foot on the cord or wire D.
The folder arms holding the sheet music may be swung by hand to their original positions if the piece is played over again and the same operation repeated.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim The improved music leaf turner consisting of a rack and a series of turning arms pivoted thereto and having sheet holders and lips or side projections, combined with a spring actuated disk or wheel, a hooked pawl pivoted on the latter and adapted to engage with the turning arms and means for actuating said disk or wheel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 19th day of January, A. D. 1893.
HUGO AI-ILSTRAND.
