ADJUSTABLE AUTOMATIC CAN-SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,981, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed September 5, 1892. Serial No. 445,124. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ANDREW KNOOKER and J osnrn LUTHER RINKER, both of Aurora, Lawrence county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adj u stable Automatic Can-Swings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention relates to improvements in adjustable automatic can-swings, and consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and designated in the claims.
The object of our invention is to improve upon the construction shown and described in the United States Letters-Patent issued to Joseph L. Rinker, August 1, 1882, No. 261,956.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of the construction of our complete invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of one of the adjustable slides. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the lower cross-bar of the swing and showing the con struction for clamping the can.
Referring to the drawings: 1 indicates a swing-frame, oblong shaped in construction and provided with trunnions 2 which extend outwardly from the side-bars 3 and 4 of the swing-frame 1 and usually at a point above the center of same. By means of said trunnions 2 the swing'frame 1 is oscillatingly mounted in a stand 5 which consists of two uprights having suitable bearings 6 into which said trunnions fit, and proper supporting braces at the bottom of said upright stand.
The swing-frame l'is provided with an adjustable sliding clamping bar 7 which is provided upon its under surface with a metallic plate 8 against which athumb-screw 9 mounted in a plate 10 in the upper surface of the lower cross-piece 11 of the swing-framel, is adapted to operate against for the forcing up of the sliding-bar 7 when the thumb-screw 9 is screwed upwardly or to allow the same to drop down when the thumb-screw is backed out of the lock 10. Both ends of said clamping-bar 7 are provided with slots 12 extending therein and which are adapted to fit over the side-bars 3 and 4 for the guidance of said bar 7. A piece of spring metal 13 provided with a central-perforation through which the trunnions 2 pass, is secured to the outer sides of the upright bars 3 and 4 and has its central portion bent outwardly to form a spring which engages the inner sides of the upright stands and prevents any side motion in the spring frame 1,
The slides 14 consist of a piece of thin sheet -metal bent to conform to three sides of, and
adapted to fit over, the side bars3and 4. One of the sides 15 is of much greater length than the others and provided with a longitudinal slot 16 which is adapted to fit over a bolt 17 which extends through the side-bars 3 and 4, and which has a washer l8 and a thumb-nut 19 upon the screw-threaded end thereof to engage the slides 14 and hold the same in a determinate position upon the side bars 3 and 4. The object of having the two sides of said slide 14 shorter than the side 15 is to prevent the same from operating in the way of the head of the bolt 17 upon one side and the spring 13 upon the sides of the swing-frame 1. Upon the outer side 20 of said slides 14 are metal loops 21 through which an endless wire 22 passes, the same passing also through a similar loop 21 upon the slide upon the other side of the swing-frame. This construction leaves a distance between the two wires, the thickness of the side-bars 3 and 4 and between which it is adapted to place the neck of the paint can 10 or other receptacle which it is desired to secure in our device.
The adjustable slides 14 may be adjusted to suit any height of receptacle by releasing the thumb-nuts 19 in the sides 3 and 4 and pushing up the said slides 14 a determinate distance and preferably keeping the two in horizontal alignment.
We will suppose that an ordinary. paintcan is to be secured in the can-swing, and by means of which the same can be tilted from either side in order that its contents may be emptied. The normal position of the swingframe 1 is a vertical one and in order to secure the can in the swing, the slides 14 and the continuous wire 22 are raised high enough to allow of the placing of the neck of the can between the two sides of the wire when the same is placed upon the clamping-bar 7. The slides 14 are then brought down as far as possible and the thumb-nuts 19 tightened in order to hold the same secure. In order to tighten the can in this position and prevent any undue motion of the same, the thumb-bolt 9 is screwed upwardly in the plate 10 thus forcing up the can which sets upon the bar 7. It will be seen by this operation that the can is securely held in the swing 1 and that the contents of same will keep the swing in a normally vertical position, and that when the swing is tilted for the emptying of the can, it will immediately resume its normal position.
We do not wish to confine ourselves to the mounting of the swing-frame l as herein shown, and in this connection desire to state that the swings can be mounted one above the other in upright posts, alsoin brackets under a counter or in a closet.
All of the parts of our device may be made of metal or of wood or parts can be made of metal and other parts of wood, to suit the uses to which they are adapted.
Having fully described our invention, what We claim is 1. In a can-swing, the combination, with a support, and a rectangular frame pivotally suspended therein, of slides conforming to and embracing the sides of the frame sidebars, said slides being provided at their front faces with longitudinal slots, and at their outer faces with loops, a continuous wire engaging said loops, bolts projecting from the and thumb-nuts mounted on the outer ends of said bolts; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a can swing, the combination, With a support, a rectangular frame pivotally suspended therein, slides conforming to and embracing the sides of the frame bars, said slides being provided at their front faces with longitudinal slots, and'at their outer faces with loops, a continuous wire engaging said loops, and binding bolts engaging the slots in the slides, of upwardly adjustable clamping means carried at the lower end of the frame; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. An improved automatic adjustable canswing having a swing-frame 1 constructed with side-bars 3 and 4, trunnions 2 mounted in said bars 3 and 4 in alignment above the center flattened U- shaped springs 13 fitting over said trunnions 2 upon the side-bars 3 and 4 to prevent the side motion of the swingframe 1, substantially as set forth.
