WINDOW-SCREEN AND STORM-SASH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,833, dated June 6, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I CYRUS FRANK WIsE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tama, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vindow-Screens and Storm-Sashes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a combined window screen and storm sash, particularly to that class wherein a fly trap screen is employed.

The object of the invention is to employ such peculiar construction whereby the usual fly screen sash may be readily and conveniently converted into a storm sash; furthermore, in combination with a convertible sash, of a screen, provided with a fly trap designed to efiectually operate to exclude insects from the interior of a house, room or the like; furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a suitable storm sash adapted, during storms, to replace the screen, and thus prove strong, durable and efficient in operation and comparatively inexpensive of manufacture.

With these objects in view the invention consists in the combined window screen and door sash comprising the sash proper, which may be hinged or otherwise suitably secured in the frame, said sash being rabbeted or grooved for the reception of fly screens or storm sashes; furthermore, the former provided with traps, constructed to operate under the theory, that the tendency of insects, particularly flies is to move toward the top of a screen, window &c., and to facilitate an effective and satisfactory operation said sash is provided with braces or beads meeting at a point near the center thereof and designed to obstruct further passage of the insects and cause them to enter an inclosed space between the screen proper and a piece of net-work or screen material secured to the opposite side. This inolosure communicates with a cylinder also formed with screen material and having open ends, through openings formed in the screen sash, thus affording an unobstructed passage to the exterior; furthermore, the invention consists in various novel details of construction and arrangement of parts whereby the several objects are attained.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1, is a view in front elevation of my improved form of combined screen and storm sash. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional View of the same taken on the line ac, 0c, of Fig. 1. Figs. 3, and 4 are detail views of the screen and trap.

In the drawings, A, indicates the sash proper, grooved and rabbeted as at a, of, for the reception, of the screen B, or storm sash O, the latter being in the form of ordinary window sash as shown in Fig. 1, and provided with a tongue 0 adapted to enter a groove a, of the frame A.

The screen material B is secured to the sash B by means of beads 12, b the former serving to hold a cylindrical portion b in position as shown in Fig. 2. This cylindrical portion is open at the ends and communicates with the interior of the house or room through the passage b formed by the groove b of the sash. On the opposite side of said sash a piece of screen material B is secured in position by the beads b These beads meet at a central point W, of the sash and are so constructed, for the purpose of obstructing farther upward passage of flies and other insects, thereby causing them to pass through open ing 19 to the cylinder thence to the exterior.

WVhen it is desired to substitute the screen for the storm sash or vice versa the exchange may be readily accomplished by releasing suitable catches or as shown partially revolving the buttons 0 to release the sash; furthermore, after the storm sash has been placed in position with the tongues engaging the grooves of the sash proper a button of any ordinary form is provided whereby said sash may be secured as shown in Fig. 2.

It is understood that various changes may be made from the detail construction of the device, Without materially departing from the general idea involved.

Having fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a Window screen, a sash, having a covering of gauze netting or other suitable material, terminating in an approximately tubular portion 19 a groove in the upper portion of said sash and an insect trap secured thereon comprising the inclined beads b the gauze or netting B and means for securing the same in position, as specified.

2. In combination, a sash provided with a screen covering terminating in an approximately tubular portion 11 and having its sides and bottom beveled and a tongueformed at the top thereof, the groove b as described, a suitable frame adapted for the reception of such sash and an insect trap comprising the inclined beads b the trap screen B and means for securing the same in position, as specified.
