WASHING-"MACHINE .SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,786, dated J une 6, 1893.

.To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, CYRUS GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in washing machines which are fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and are specifically pointed out in the subjoined claim.
Figure l is across section of a machine embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is abottom view showing portions of the rubber and of the lid, and a section (on the line XX of Fig. l) of the connection between the two.
The main body of the machine is made up of side pieces A A of wood, which are connected near the top by end strips A2 A2 to which are fastened the opposite ends of the sheet metal bottom piece A. This piece is corrugated transversely and is bent in a semicircle to form a curved bottom for the tub. The edges of the sheet are recessed into the wooden sides A A as indicated at a, and transverse bolts B, which pass also through the supporting legs a', serve to bind the parts lirmly and closely together. The lid or cover C is hinged at one end to the body of themachine as shown at c. The rubber is operated by means of a double lever D the lower ends of which pass downward through the cover, the latter being recessed at the sides suliciently for this purpose. These lower ends of the lever are provided with castings E, the upper ends of which are formed with truunions or pins E which engage bearings c secured to the under side of the lid C and on which the lever rocks in operating the rubber. The rubber itself is connected to the lever so as to be automatically adjustable by means of vertical arms G which slide in grooves e in the castings E while pins or hooks g at the upper end of said arms slide in slots e in said castings and serve to prevent the disengagement of the rubber from the lever when the latter is raised. The rubber is formed of a central transverse bar or rib F', and a parallel piece F on either side of said central bar provided with depending blades or wings ff which are set at reversed angles as shown.
In filling the machine with clothesto be Washed, the lid is thrown back upon the hinges c, thus raising the operating lever D which is pivted to it, and also the rubber which is carried by the ends of the lever. Vhen the lid is closed the central bar F" and blades ff of the rubber bear upon the clothes, the bars G sliding upward in the groove of the lever castings E a greater or less distance according to the amount of clothing placed in the machine. The lid being locked and the lever swung back and forth the rubber is moved with it and the clothes are thoroughly cleansed in a very short time. The lid C is practically a close lit so as to prevent escape of steam while at the same time allowing free swing to the lever. The single movement of opening the lid also removes the lever and rubber from the tub allowing free access to the clothes, while at the same time, the rubber is free to adjust itself properly to suit the amount of clothes in the tub.
Having thus described my invention, I do not limit myself to the exact construction showngbut Vhat I claim is- In a Washing machine having a hinged lid C the operating lever D pivoted thereto and having its lower ends provided with fittings E formed with truunions E', grooves e, and slots e', in combination with a rubber having arms G slidable in said grooves and stops g at the end of said arms, engaging the slots, substantially as described.
