CASKET-HANDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of, Letters Patent No. 498,610, dated May 30, 1893..

citizen of the United States, and aresident attaching to, and detaching the handles from.

caskets; the purpose being to have more elaborate handles than are commonly used, and to detach the same just before the interment or cremation.

The invention consists in the following construction and arrangement:

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical view showing one of the several posts through which the extended rail or tube forming the Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows another mode of construction, in which the fastening device is placed between the posts through which the rail or tube forming the handle passes. Fig. 4 is a bottom view reduced in size. Fig. 5 is a plan of the plate to be fastened to the side of the casket, and to which the handle is attached. Fig. 6 is an end view of the; bolt, and Fig. 7 an edge view of 'the attachment plate.

The device complete consists of several posts similar to that shown in Fig. 1 and through which the rod or tube forming the handle passes.

In the sectional view, Fig. 2, is shown one of the posts and attachments, consisting of the plate 8 to be screwed or otherwise fastene'd to the side of the casket w; the base 9 around which is the rim n m; the post D; the thumb nut a; the bolt 0 with the head 0 and square neck 1", and a portion of the rail 1). The bolthcatl engaging with the plate 8, the bolt passing through the axis of the hollow post I), and diametrically through the rail handle I), and the end of thcbolt provided a proper width to admit the bolt, the head of 7 said bolt projecting to either side sufficiently to be held securely against the under side of. .the plate.

At t' t', depressions are made in the plate, to prevent any slipping of the bolthead when contained therein. v

In Fig. 4 the plate 5 is shown in dotted lines, and the bolt engaged therewith.

The attachment plate 3 maybe made in many different ways but the one I prefer is the one described in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.

In the same figure the bolt 0 is made square at the neck 1', and the vertical hole through the base through which the bolt passes is also square. In some cases I have a coiled spring around the bolt 0, one end of the coil being fastened to the bolt 0 below the rail 1), the other end fastened to the base near the neck said spring being for the purpose of projecting the bolthead 0 when the thnmbnut a is loosened, the object being to make easier the connection with the plate .9.

In Fig. 3 are represented three posts on one base, the rail forming the handle passing through the outer posts D D, the central or middle post being shorter, and containing the attachment device as heretofore described. In this figure the base is made sectional,

' 1. A detachable casket handle comprising a handpiece and support provided with a bolt and thumbnutadapted to be secured to a plate that is permanently fastened to the side of a casket, substantially as described.

2. In a burial casket handle, the combination with the plate .9, the bolt 0 and bolthead c, the thumbnut a, the rail b, thepost D, provided with the rim n {1: around the base g, substantially as described.
