SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,581, dated May 30, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES SHAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayue and State of Michigan,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Poles, of which the following is a specification,reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful to improvements in carriage poles, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of an adjustable extension for a circle bar, and further in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of the various I 5 parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a vehicle pole embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged, central, horizontal section through one of the extensions of the circle bar.
In the present state of the art carriage poles have been made with different forms of adj ustment, but so far as I am aware all such adjustments embody some kind of a clamping device, which must be loosened when the connecting part of the pole is desired to be adjusted, and must be tightened when it is desired to be secured in its adjusted position. My invention consists in so constructing the extensions of the circle bar or cross bar arms forming part of said extensions that they are locked at every point in the adjustment.
A is the pole, the rear end of which alone is shown. This pole is secured to the cross 5 bar or circle bar B, which is braced in any suitable manner by the braces 0. At each end of this circle bar I form the adjustable extension, and as both ends are alike, a description of one will suffice for both. The extension preferably consists of two parts, the part D which I will call the socket iron,
as it is usually constructed of a socket, or is bifurcated to receive the end of the circlebar, being secured thereto by means of bolts,
E. In the drawings, I have shown these bolts also securing the ends of the braces, but this is immaterial. This socket iron is provided with a pivot plate F.

The arm G at its inner end is provided with the bearing block I pivoted thereto in the usual manner and adapted to engage with the ordinary draw jacks on the axle I.
The arm G at one side is provided with the bifurcated extension J at the upper end of which is the cross bar or bolt K. The socket iron is provided on the same side with the off-sets L separated a short distance and apertured to receive the bolt M, which passes through both apertures and through the nut N between the two off-set portions. The bolt and nut are suitably screw-threaded so that by turning the out which bears each side against the ofi-set portion, the bolt will be adjusted in or out. The bolt at its outer end is provided with a slotted head 0, the crossbar K engaging with the slot therein. The parts being thus constructed, in order to adjust the arms G toward or from each other to fit the vehicle to which the pole is to be attached I turn the nut Nina direction desired, retracting or extending the bolt M, which acting through the off-set J will move the arm G to the desired position, and it is evident that as the nut will lock the bolt at any desired position, no tightening or loos- 8o ening of clamping parts is required in making the adjustment, enabling me not only to effect the adjustment quickly, but also pre venting the possibility of any parts rattling, and also obviating the difficulty which would arise in casea clamping bolt were used and in case such clamping bolt became loose which is frequently the case.
tVhat I claim as my invention is l. The combination with the pole, the circle 0 bar and adjustable arms at the end of the circle bar, of a screw bolt extending from the adjustable arm to the circle bar and a nut for adjusting said bolt engaging between the two stationary bearings,wherebythe arm is locked at every point of adjustment, substantially as described.
