ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,577, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed November 16, 1891. Serial No. 411,979. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- ject from the upper side of the frame A at one Be it known that I, ALBERT SCHMID, a citiend, and theselugs receive corresponding lugs zen of the United States of America, and a (1 formed upon the upper portionfof the fieldresident of Allegheny, in the county of Allemagnet of the motor. The two parts are 5 gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inthen hinged together by means of a bolt. In

Gear casings, R, such as are described in my patent No. 442,459, dated December 9, 1890, and Design Patent No. 20,481, dated January 13,1891, are also provided for incasing the pinion r and gear wheel R which are respectively carried by the armature shaft and the car axle.
I claim as my invention 1. In an electric motor, the combination of a supporting frame, a field-magnet formed in two sections, one section hinged to one end of the frame and the other section hinged to the other end of the frame.
2. In an electric motor, a supporting frame for carrying the armature and field-magnet, said field-magnet being constructed in two sections, one section being hinged to the said frame upon its upper side at one end, and the other section being hinged to the said frame upon its lower side and at the other end.
3. In a motor for street cars, the combination of a field-magnet formed in two sections, a frame, to the opposite ends of which said sections are respectively pivoted and bearings formed in said frame for receiving the axle of the car.
4C. In a motor for street cars, the combination of a cylindrical field magnet having inwardly projecting poles, said field magnet being formed in two sections, a frame to which said sections are independently hinged and bolts normally holding said sections together.
5. In a motor for street-cars, a cylindrical field-magnethavinginwardlyprojectingpoles, removable separately-wound coils carried by the respective poles, said field-magnet being formed in sections, a frame to which the sections are pivoted upon opposite sides and at opposite ends, substantially as described.
6. In a motor for street cars, a frame consisting of side bars and the cross bars at the front and rear ends, one of said cross bars having hinging lugs mounted upon its upper side and the other having hinging lugs mounted upon its lower side.
7. A frame for electric motors consisting of a single casting having upwardly extending hinging lugs at one end and downwardly extending hinging lugs at the other end.
S. In a frame for electric motors for street cars bearings for the car axle at one end, and hinging lugs upon the under side of the frame at the other end.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 6th day of November, A. D. 1891.
ALBERT SOIIMID.
