JOHN KRATZ, OF'BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. l
CABLE-G RIP.
QPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,517, dated May 30, v18.93. i v
Application filed April 3, 1893. .Serial No. 468,777. (No model.) i
` of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Gripping Devices for Cable Railways, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates specifically to certain improvements in the lower or movable grip shoe, which, to place the carin motion,is drawn upward so as to clamp or grip the cable between itself and the fixed grip shoe; and the object of the invention is .to prevent the cable, when the car is stopped, from bearing on the gripping portion of the lower or movable shoe, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the further description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof in which- Figure l is an end'view of the lower part` of the cable grip; and Fig. 2 a section of Fig. l taken on the dotted line showing the positions of the various parts thereof when the cable is released. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 except that the cable-is shown as gripped. Fig. 4 is a top View of the lower grip shoe alone, and Fig. 5 an under side view of the same.
. Referring to the drawings, A represents the stationary section, and B the movable section of the grip frame.
C is the upperor stationary grip shoe, which is of ordinary construction.
' D is the lower and movable grip shoe composed principally of the central part c and portion a of the shoe.
against the under face of the end piecesb andk c., The strength of the spring vis such that when the shoe is lowered it forces the end pieces h and c up, and the rollersv then sup-v port the cable from contact with the central When the shoeis lifted to apply the grip, the central part ct only of the shoe is raised, and the rollers E E and the end pieces b and c become inoperative.
By this construction, the cable when notused is considerably less wear on the cable than -when it is dragged overa resisting surface.- The rollers being partially immersed 1n oil,
the wear on their bearings is lnuch reduced.
I claim as my inventionl. In a gripping device for a cable car, the combination of a stationary grip shoe, a vertically moving lower shoe which consists of a center piece, with sprin g supported end pieces hinged to the center piece and extending longitudinally of the same, and rollers journaled in the said end pieces, whereby as the said center piece is lowered the cable is supported by the said rollers andout of contact with the center piece, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a gripping device for a cable car, the lower grip shoe having spring supported hinged end'pieces provided` withrollers situated in oil boxessubstantially as speciied.
3. In agripping device for a cable car, a lower grip shoe having spring supported end pieces which extend longitudinally thereof, combined with rollers journaled inthe said end pieces, substantially as specified.
