Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. S. SHEPARDSON, OF SHELBURNE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 H. S. SHEPARDSON & CO.
GRATER FOR SPICES AND FRUITS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,836, dated September 5, 1865.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. S. SHEPARDsoN, of Shelburne Falls, in the county oi' Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graters for Rasping Fruit, Spices, &c.,or in the Punching of Metal Plates therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full7 clear, and eX- act description ot' the saule, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plate punched for the purpose, but of course the grater may be of any ofthe shapes or forms used for such purposes.
My invention consists in the shape, form, and arrangement of the punched holes so as to leave a n or rasping edge on the portion stamped down or through, and also a throat through which the rasped or grated material may pass through and be delivered from the plate or grating-surface.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use lny invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the draw- The plate A is punched from the under toward the upper surface of the saine, as seen in the drawing, so as to form a series of holes, c, margined by tin-like or rasping edges a. The material grated on these edges passes thron gli these holes or throats, and there is a channel or indentation, c, in the metal, leading from the throat downward, that guides the material through and makes it of easy delivery on the opposite side from where the grating is done. The series of lips or fins margining the throats form a ledge or projection on the grating-surface, so as to readily catch and rasp oli' anything moved against said lips or iins. After the plate or plates are punched, as above stated, they may be put into any of the usual shapesl or forms in which grates are used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Punching a plate or plates for graters so as to have a iin or lip, a throat, and a conducting-channel, substantially as herein described and represented.
H. S. SHEPARDSON.
