COCK FOR WATER-COOLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,366, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed January 28, 1893.; Serial No. 459,966- (No model.) I
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatl, JOSEPH H. SAVILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cocks for Water- Coolers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of cocks, designed more especially for use in conjunction with water coolers and the like; and it has for its general object to provide a simple, durable and compact selfclosing cock, and one embodying such a construction that buta minimum amount of frictional wear will result from use, and when the same takes place it will not affect the efficiency of the cock.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1, is a vertical, diametrical section of my improved cock; the same being illustrated in position upon the discharge pipe of a cooler. Fig. 2, is a detail elevation of that side of the valve casing which rests contiguone to the cooler. Fig. 3, is a perspective View of the valve body or core removed. Fig. 4, is a similar View of the valve, and Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the spout section.
Referring by letter to said drawings:-A, indicates a portion of a water cooler, and B, indicates the draw off pipe thereof which may form a permanent or fixed part of the cooler or of my improved cock, as is most desirable. In most cases the draw off pipe B, forms a permanent part of the cooler, and I therefore provide the outer end of the same with threads a, designed and adapted to engage the threaded aperture 1), of the head 0, of my improved cock. This head 0, is provided with a chamber c, which communicates with the pipe B, and is also provided at one end with an enlarged recess d, which communicates with the chamber 0, and serves to form the shoulder e,
which in turn serves to seat the valve as will be presently explained.
D, indicates the slidable or movable casing of my improved cock; This casing which surroundsthe fixed head C, is provided with a longitudinal slot f, for the passageof the pipe B, and is also provided with a spout E, or nozzle which is preferably connected in a detachable manner so that it may be readily removed when desired to permit of an introduction or removal of the parts inclosed by the casing. The bore of the spout or nozzle E, is reamed out at one end as shown,so as to form moves with the casing D. This valve F, which is hollow and is provided with the laterally disposed apertures h, has aconoidal upper end as shown, whereby it will be seen thatit effectually prevent the passage of water from the chamber a.
By reason of the peculiar formof the valve F, it will be further seen that when the seat 2, has become worn and enlarged, said valve will extend farther into the chamber 0, and will thereby effectually close communication between the said chamber and the recess d.
G, indicates a spring, which is designed and adapted to normally hold the head 0, upon the valve'F. This spring G, is interposed between the upper end of the head or movable seat 0, and the casing D, whereby it will be seen that it will serve to hold the .casing in its normally raised position and will also serve to raise the casing to such position and the head or seat upon the valve, after the user removes his hand from the head of the casing.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a cock for water coolers or the like, the combination of a head adapted to be connected to a fixed discharge or draw-off pipe and having a chamber to receive from said pipe, a casing movable with respect to the head, a valve carried by said casing and adapted to close the chamber of the head, and a spring interposed between the head and the casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cock for water coolers and the like, the combination with a head adapted to be connected to a discharge pipe and having a chamber to receive from said pipe; of a casing movable with respect to the head, avalve carried by the casing and having a conoidal upper end adapted to close the chamber of the head, and also having apertures for the passage of the water, and a springinterposed between the head, and the casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3- A cock for water coolers or the like comprising a head adapted to be connected to a discharge pipe and having a chamber to receive from said pipe, a casing movable with respect to the head and having a slot for the passage of the discharge pipe, avalve carried by the casing and adapted to close the cham ber of the head, and a spring interposed between the head and the casing, substantially as specified.
