ABRAHAM JEFFREYS DELP, OF BANGOR, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER-Fl LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,349, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed February 15. 1893. Serial No.462-487- (N0 mo el-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM JEFFREYs DELP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Paper-File, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved combinedbill file and perforator, and it consists in the novel combination and construction of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference being had to the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the movable needles. Fig. 4 is a detail illustrating a preferred form of needle fastening device.
A, A, represent two upstanding wires or tubes attached to a base W, of any suitable construction.
B, B, are two curved and movable locking needles which are curved as shown, and whose outer ends are pointed to fit into the upper ends of wires A, A, and form a continuation thereof, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, in the well known manner. The other extremities of said needles are connected together by a transverse piece I), and they may also be further connected by transverse piece or pieces I) as shown, so that they are rigidly united and must move synchronously. The piece b and connected ends of needles B, B, are confined in an arc-shaped slot 0, in a block 0 attached to the base W in such position that when the needles are drawn outward from the slot, the front ends thereof will engage the wires A, A. The slot 0 is so curved (to correspond with needles B, B,) that the needles B, 13, move lengthwise in a circular path and are not hinged or pivoted.
As shown, the needles B, B, and piece b are formed of one piece of wire; but they may be separate parts, and instead of using a wire I), abar or plate may be employed to give greater strength. The needles may be locked when closed in any suitable manner desired. I have shown a spring catch B which is fastened to the base, or block, and plays through 50 a slot 0 in the block in such position that when the needles are drawn out into engagement with wires A, the catch springs behind piece I) and locks the needles in this position. When it is desired to separate the needles from wires A, the catch can be lifted by the finger, and the needles shifted back to unclosed position.
Block O has a rearward extension 0 transversely slotted as at c, and in this slot is the perforating device, which as shown is formed 7,
of a U-shaped wire or plate D the ends of which are pivoted to the block within the slot as at cl and have perforating studs E attachedto them. The said studs are a distance apart equal to the distance apart of wires A', A, and underlie punch openings e, e, in the block above the slot 0 as shown. The outer end of plate D is bent down so that the end of base W is thereby kept normally raised as indicated in Fig. l.
A spring plate F is secured within slot 0' above plate D, its outer end being bent down.
so as to depress plate D and keep the studs E normally below slot 0'.
The plate D and spring F may be constructed and arranged in, any suitable manner.
The spring F as shown has perforations f for the passage of studs E, and it performs another useful function; that is when papers are inserted in slot 0 to be perforated; as D is raised, spring F is likewise raised and holds the papers firmly and neatly against the top of slot 0' while being perforated.
It will be noticed that by my construction the plate D does not have to be handled to perforate the papers, for after the edges of the paper are inserted in the slot 0 (as indicated at P in Fig. 1) by depressing the end of base W to which block 0 is attached, the paper will be perforated, and this can be done by the thumb of the party while holding the paper in the slot. Plate D also serves as a bail by which to suspend the file.
To file papers the edges thereof are first inserted in slot 0 and perforated as described, by simply depressing the rear end of the base; they are then removed, and (wires B, B, be-
ing unclosed as described) are strung on wires A by the perforations just made therein; the wires B are then closed and the papers are securely filed, and the whole may be suspended by bail D as described.
In Fig. 4: a set thumb screw II is attached to rod 1) and plays through slot C in the block; by this screw the needles can be locked in any position desired. The screw fastening is more secure than the spring and in some cases preferred by me.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is
1. In a bill file the combination of the 1ongitudinally movable curved needles; with a block having a curved slot to receive the extremities of the needles, which reciprocate in said slot to close and unclose the needles substantially as described.
2. In a bill file the combination of the base, the Wires and the longitudinally movable curved needles mounted in curved slots and adapted to be reciprocated therein substantially as described.
In a bill file the combination of the base, the wires and the longitudinally movable curved needles mounted in curved slots, and
adapted to be reciprocated therein and the means for locking said needles, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a bill file the combination of the base, the wires and the longitudinally movable curved needles mounted in curved slots, and the perforating devices substantially as described.
5. In a bill file the combinationof the base, the wires and the longitudinally movable curved needles mounted in curved slots, and
the thumb screw for locking said needles, and the perforating devices, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the slotted block, the pivoted perforating plate D, and the spring F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination of-the base, the slotted and perforated block 0, and the curved perforating plate D,all substantially as described.
8. The combination of the base, the wires, and the block having a curved slot, with the connected longitudinally movable needles, substantially as described.
9. The combination of the base, the Wires A, A, and the block 0; with the needles B, B, the piece I) and a fastening device for the needles substantially as and for the purpose described.
10. In a paper file the combination of the base, the Wires, and theblock having a curved slot, and a rear slotted and perforated extension; with the longitudinally movable needles engaging the curved slots in the block, and the perforating plate and spring plate connected to the block, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and forthe purpose described.
In testimony that I claim'the foregoing as my own Ihereun to aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
