SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 498,318, dated May 30, 1893. Application filed August 15, 1892. Serial No. 443,095. (No model.)

Be it known that I, WILHELM C. STEERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates mainly to an extension-top for kitchen tables and means for operating the same, and it consists of a` peculiar and novel construction of parts as will be hereinafter fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in' which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my table with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same with leaves extended. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken through the line ac Fig. 2.

The top A ot' the table rests normally upon a bar B, placed midway of and transverselyv across the frame.

BX BX are two screws with headsdownward or in reverse position and which heads rest loosely in notches Q in the longitudinal bars of the table frame. The ends of these screws extend up and loosely through holes in the barB and enter the table top A to hold it loosely in place on the cross-bar so that either end maybe raised to admit the extension leaves. Y

The extension leaves C 'and D are of the same thickness as the transverse-bar B and are suitably attached to the inclined brackets E Ex,the latterbeing capable of extension in mortises F, F, F, F madein each of the four legs of the table and when the supporting brackets are drawn outward or extended the leaves C, D, may take the position shown in Fig. 2 and form close connection with the top of the table and be placed in a position flush with its surface.

Suitable clips G GX are attached to and project below the lower edges of the brackets and slide along the opposite outer faces of the ways H HX which are supported by the table body and cross each other midway, as shown in Figs. l and 2; and these clips prevent the entire withdrawing of the brackets when they come against the inner faces of the table legs. By this mcans the brackets are prevented from binding and from lateral movement and all the parts will run smoothly.

I claim, and desire In order to close the extension leaves the `ends of the center leaf or top of the table are slightly raised alternately sufficient play being had around the screw to permit; when the brackets carrying the extensions are pushed backward until the inner ends of the eXtension leaves strike the cross-bar B and the top and leaves will assume the position shown in elevation in Fig. l and a continuous and fixed table-top proper is had. When ilt is desired to adjust the parts, the top is raised a little and the screws are turned 'by hand (which movement the notches Q permit) until their tips are passed upward into or drawn out of the top A, whereby the wear of parts can be taken up.

Under the rail I, and at each side of the middle standard Uis placed a sliding, kneading and cutting-board K KX, both of which can be drawn outward as occasion requires, aud beneath these are the drawers L LX and flour and meal bins N N separated bythe rail M.

As thus constructed a kitchen table is had of great convenience and at a small cost.

Having thus described my invention, what to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a table, a frame, two opposite bars of which have notches, a cross bar connecting said opposite bars and having holes registering with said notches, inverted screws whose heads rest in said notches and whose Shanks pass upward through said holes, and a top piece resting centrally upon said cross bars and into which the tips of the screws vtake: combined with opposi tel y-inclinedv ways within thetableframe, brackets passing through mortises in the legs of the frame andvat right angles to said cross-bar and sliding upon said ways, clips secured to the brackets and engaging the opposite outer edges of the ways, and extension leaves mounted upon said brackets and adapted when housed to abut against the opposite edges of said cross-bar, as and for the purpose set forth.
