To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROY MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alma Centre, 1n the county of Jackson and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Fil- Ing-Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in filing cabinets, and especially to a file slide or drawer therefor,as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of this invention is to simplify the construction and arrangement of parts of a device of the character set forth, and to pro vide means for storing papers ina convenient manner so that they may be readily inspected when so desired, or transferred from one point to another, or temporarily removed whenvitis necessary to withdraw one of the papers, the parts being simple and effective in their construction and operation, and comparatively Inexpensive.

In the drawingsz-Fignre 1 is a perspective view of the improved cabinet. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section thereof. Fig. 3 is a a detail perspective view of one of the file slides or drawers removed. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modification of construction.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the outer frame or casing, which may be made in any preferable form and positioned either vertically, as shown, or horizontally, and is provided with a central partition 2, from which extends divisional strips or rails 3, having arranged at right angles thereto a series of guide trips 4 with intervening spaces 5 between opposing edges thereof, and in alignment with one edge of each of the divisional strips or rails 3, and adapted to removably receive file-slides or drawers 6. The file slides or drawers 6 consist of bottom boards or supports 7, having recesses 8 arranged adjacent to each other in one end thereof. To the outer portion of each ofthe bottom boards or supports 7 is secured a guard strip 9, which is of suflicient width to close the space between two of the guide strips or rails 3 to pro# Itect the papers carried by the said bottom boards or supports, Yand avoid a collection of dust thereon and injury to the papers. The said guide strips are secured to the bottom boards or supports 7 by brackets 10 of substantially triangular' form, by means of screws 11, which are secured to the said parts and passed throughtlanges 12 in connection with the said brackets. It will be noticed that each ofthe slides or drawers is formed without side or rear strips, and as shown in Fig. 3, elastic cords 12 are secured to the outer side of leach of the bottom boards or supports 7, and passed through the recesses 8. As shown in Fig. 4 this construction is slightly modified, and the cords l2 are replaced by small springs 13, and both forms of the devices provide a yielding binding, which are held apart by being passed through the recesses 8, as hereinbefore set forth.

At one end of the inner side of the bottom board or support 7 is located a projection 14, and is adapted to be engaged by a plate l5 connected to the ends of the elastic cords 12Y or the springs 13, which is formed with an opening or eye to t over the said projection l 4 to produce a binding effect by drawing said cords or springs with a certain amount of tension over the said bottom board or support. The plate 15 is constructed of such length and width that when it is in locked position, it will bear against the lower portions of the filed papers and thereby hold the same against the bottom board or support and prevent curling thereof. The papers are secured over a hollow pin or post 16, projecting from the bottom board or support 7 adjacent to the recesses 8, and is readily apparent that this form of pin or post may be duplicated without departing from the nature or spirit of the invention. Y In removing the papers from the post or pin 16, or to place them in such position that any single paper desired to be removed or inspected may be readily reached, one or more transfer wires 17 are provided and adapted to be inserted in the end orends of the pins or posts 16, and when not in use, said transfer wire or wires may be held in connection with each slide or drawer by being inserted under the elastic cords l2 or the springs 13, as fully shown. The said cords l2 or springs 13 bear against the side portions ICC of the papers and hold them in position at these points, and further, when it is desired to remove or inspect certain papers, the plate 15 is released from connection with the projection 14 when said operation may be readily accomplished. Further, one filing pin or post is preferred to two, as any of the papers can be turned around so that other papers under the same be readily examined.

A great advantage is derived from having the slides or drawers 6 moving in vertical planes, as shown in Fig. 1, as the papers will be held in vertical position and can be more quickly examined or inspected, and when arranged in this position, they are indexed at the upper ends thereof as shown at 18, and when arranged in horizontal position are indexed as shown at 19.

The whole device is neat and compact in its appearance, and the guard strips 9 are arranged at such a distance from where the front of the papers would come as to provide a space between the front edges of the papers and the said guard strips, to permit free eX# amination of the papers. When one of the slides or drawers becomes filled the contents may be moved to a suitable binding or transfer case, and if desired the papers may be perforated before filing to render the operation of fastening the same to the transfer wire more convenient.

Having thus described the invention, what 1s claimed as new is- 1. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a slide or drawer havingaprojection, and a pair of elastic strips carrying a plate adapted to engage said projection, substantially as described.

2. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a slide or drawer having recesses in one end thereof, a pair of elastic binding strips passing through said recesses, a filing pin or post, and a plate secured to said binding strips and adapted to engage a projection, substantially as described.

3. In a tiling cabinet, the combination of a filing slide or drawer, consisting of a bottom board or support and a guard strip connected thereto by brackets,a filing pin or post on said bottom board or support and arranged on opposite sides of said pin and a pair of elastic binding-strips secured to said bottom board or support, substantially as described.

4. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a slide or drawer having a hollow iiling pin or post in connection therewith and a transfer wire adapted to be insertedin said hollow pin or post, substantially as described.
