It may be understood that in the operation of weaving a fabricwith a figured design,
many different colors or shades and tints may be required to form the pattern as in flowers,- fruit, leaves, 850., which are supplied by different shuttles having quills wound with such different colors or shades. These shuttles are held usually in separate compartments formedina vertically movable box, which are brought alternatively in line with the race formed on the batten to permit the picking stick to throw such shuttle from the box on. the opposite side passing through the Warp shed in its progress or travel. The one shuttle may remain in operatio'npassing backward and forward for several picks or movements of the batten, and then be replaced by an other which may be located in a compartment above or below it, in which event the box is raised or lowered, removing the one and replacing it with another. In some cases the design may call for a-shuttle which may be separated from the onein use by one containing a color not required. In this case the box has to be lifted or lowered two spaces or compartments, passing by the one not re- 40 quired, or as in the case of a box containing four shuttles the top shuttle may be in use and the bottom one called for, then the box will have to be raised the whole distance of the travel. It will be understood that the boxes at each end of the batten are connected by suitable levers and arranged so that they alternatively serve as receiving or discharging receptacles for the shuttle in use.

In said drawings a represents the frame of a loom, in which is arranged the shaft 0, adapted to transmit its motion'through crank 5 50 and pitman a" to the lay or batten 25 secured to swords t, the latter fulcrumed at z to the frame. At each end of the lay are arranged the shuttle boxes on supported by rods 11 and surrounded by spiral springs to, as in the I00 usual manner. On the shaft 0 is also secured a cam (1 adapted to operate one arm of angle 5 lever e, which latter is pivotally secured to the frame, as shown at f, and which is held against cam d by spring 37 as shown in Fig. 1. The other arm of said lever is provided with an elongated slot, in which is pivoted (adjustably) ona pin e one endof link 9. On shaft 01. is firmly secured a sprocket wheel 0, upon which the pattern chain, provided with wheels or rollers 19, is located. An octagonal stop wheel 13 is also secured to said shaft, and is controlled by a stop pawl or spring 11 the latter being secured to frame a in any desired manner.

The freeends of the treadle levers are connected by cords or wires 4", r 0' and r with the shuttle box operating mechanism, as will a be hereinafter more fully described.
To the frame a are secured in any desired manner, bracket frames 1 and 2, the projecting portions 51, 51, and 52, 52 of which form the bearings for the shafts 3 and 4, and 5 and 6. 0n each of these shafts is arranged a m utilated crank gear, 7, S, 9 and 10 respectively, which is splined thereon by a feather, operating in a groove 3t of each shaft, as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 9. Each of said crank gears 7, 8, 9 and 10 is provided with an annularly grooved collar 32, the groove of which is engaged by the pins 33, secured to the free ends of the forked portions 31, of levers 35, 36, 37 and 38 (Figs. 7, 8 and 9.) The crank gear 7 on shaft 3 is operated by bell crank lever 35 integral with sleeve 3 which latter is loosely arranged on shaft 16. The free end of bell crank lever 35 is connected by cord 0' with treadle lever q. The crank gear 8 on shaft 4 is operated through lever 36, depending from sleeve .9 which latter is firmly secured to shaft 16. On the opposite end of said shaft is also firmly secured a sleeve 8', provided with an inwardly extending arm 39, the free end of which'is attached to the cord 0. The crank gear 9 on the shaft 5, is shifted by means of the'bell crank lever 37, pivoted as at 40 to an extending bearing of the bracket frame. The free end of the horizontal arm of on shaft 6 is operated in a similar manner by bell crank lever 38, pivoted at 42 to an extending bearing of the bracket frame. Its freearm is provided with a pin, engaging the slotted end of lever 43 integral with sleeve 8, which latter is secured to shaft 17. At the opposite end of said shaft is also secured a sleeve 5 provided with a horizontal arm (similar to arm 39 Fig. 8, to which latter the cord 0' is attached. To the outer ends of each of the shafts 3, 4, 5 and 6 is secured a hand wheel R, whereby said shafts can be operated by hand when the loom is not in motion. The hereinbefore mentioned shafts 16 and 17 are arranged at right angles to the shafts 3, 4, 5 and 6, and have their hearings in the upwardly extending portions 54, 54 and 55 55 of the bracket frames 1 and 2 respectively. Each of said crank gears 7, 8, 9 and 10 has two diametrically opposite teeth removed, as clearly shown in Figs 1 and 4. These teeth are removed to prevent said crank gears from being rotated by their gear connection more than one-half a revolution at one time.
On the shaft 1), which has its bearings in the frame of the loom, is firmly secured the mutilated master gear wheel M, the periphery of which is provided with sets of teeth N and 0, arranged in two vertical planes. The teeth N are arranged in two quarter sections, diametrically opposite to each other, the quartersections of the teeth being separated by a quads Upon the shafts 3, 4, 5 and 6 are firmly secured the disks having two diametrically opposite fiat faces 18, 19, 20 and 21 respectively. To the flat faced disk 18 is secured a pin or stud 22, arranged eccentrically to shaft 3,.and engaging the elongated slot 23 of lever 11, which lever 11 is at about its center also eccentrically pivoted to the shaft 4 as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. The free end of said lever is pivotally connected to the upper end of link 56,the lower end of which link is pivoted to the shuttle box supporting rod 12 as shown in Fig. 1. To the flat faced disk 20 is secured a pin or stud 24, arranged eccentrically to shaft 5 and engaging the elongated slot 25 of lever 12, which latter at about cured a lever 59 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1), the free end of which is pivotally connected to the shuttle box supporting 'rod (on the opposite side of the loom), in-a similar manner as is the lever 56 pivoted to its'shuttle box supporting rod '0. The flat faced disks 18 and 19 and also 20 and 21 are provided with locking devices or brakes 26 and27, each of which consists of'two angle levers, (pivoted preferably to the bracket frames 1 and 2,) one arm of which rests upon the periphery of the disk and the other arm is controlled by a spiral spring 28, connecting with the like arm of the other brake, as shown in Fig. 4.
The motion from the driving shaft 0 is transmitted to the shaft b, by a train of gear wheels, arranged on the opposite side of the loom, as in the ordinary manner, and is not illustrated in the drawings.

Now supposing the bottom shuttle'is calledforz- In that case the lever qis raised, and through the heretofore described connection with crank gear 8, said gear is brought into engagement with the teeth N of the master gear, and is thereby rotated, thus raising the lever 11 through its eccentric connecting with shaft 4-- one compartment. The pin 22 on fiat faced disk 18 remaining in its lowest position and acts as the fulcrum for the lever 11. This position of the lever 11 is indicated bydiagram numbered IV Fig. 5. In case the second shuttle (from the top) is required, the crank gear 7 is operated to bring the pin 22 of flat faced disk 18 into its highest position, whereby the lever 11 assumes the position shown in the diagram numbered II of Fig. 5. The spring controlled levers or brakes 26, serve to throw the crank gears 7 and 8 into their normal position, after said gears are withdrawn from alignment with the master gear, as will be manifest. The mode of operation of the lower crank gears 9 and 10 and the connecting lever 12 is the same as that of the upper crank gears 7 and 8 and the lever 11, except that the crank gears 9 and 10 are brought into eugagement with the toothed sections 0 of the master gear, and the lever 12 operates through shaft 14 and lever 39 the shuttle supporting I other arm of said lever e, pawl 19, ratchet 19 1 and sprocket wheel 0 carrying. the pattern chain, the free end of said link g being adapted to operate said sprocket wheel 0 through pawl 19 and ratchet 13 with a series of levers q, q,q ,q adapted to be operated by said pattern chain,a series of forked levers adapted to be operated by said levers q, q, g g a series of crank gearsadapted tobe moved on their'shafts by said levers q, q, Q2, through the series of forked levers connected to said levers q, q, g by cords 1'', r 7, r, and with a mutilated master gear having its teeth arranged in two vertical planes and separated thereon into quarter sections diametricallyoppositetoeach other and adapted when the crank gears are moved on their shafts to engage the teeth of said crank gears and rotate the same, and with the shuttle boxes and a series of levers connecting the crank gears with the said shuttle boxes, all arranged, so that when said angle lever is operated by the cam 11, the pattern chain is actuated and through the levers q, q, g g and intermediate connections, throw the crank gears into and out of connection with the master-gear, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the driving shaft 0, cam (1 carried by said shaft, angle lever 6, spring 37 for normally holding one arm of said lever in contact with the cam cl, and means for holding levere against the force of the spring, link 9 adj ustably pivoted to the other arm of said lever e, with said link g, pawl 19', ratchet p and sprocket wheel 0 carrying the pattern chain, the free end of said link g being adapted to operate said sprocket wheel 0 through pawl 19' and ratchet p with a series of levers q, q, g g adapted to be operated by said pattern chain, a series of forked levers adapted to be operated by said levers q, q, g (1 a series of crank gears adapted to be moved on their shafts by said levers q, q, g g through the series of forked levers connected to said levers q, q, (1 g", by cords '1', r r r, and with a mutilated master gear having its teeth arranged in two vertical planes and separated thereon into quarter sections diametrically opposite to each other and adapted when the crank gears are moved on their shafts to engage the teeth of said crank gears and rotate the same, and with a series of flat faced disks carried by the shafts of said crank gears and a system of spring controlled brakes bearing upon the surface of said disks and adapted to stop the rotation of the shafts and crank gears when the said crank gears are not in mesh with the master gear, and with the shuttle boxes and a series of levers connecting the crank gears with the said shuttle boxes, all arranged,so that when said angle lever is operated by the cam d, the pattern chain is actuated and through the levers q,q',q and intermediate connections, throw the crank gearsinto and outof connection with the master gear, substantially as described.
