Description

(No Model.)
F. M. HARTMAN. THILL COUPLING.
N0. 498 ll4. Patented May 23,1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. HARTMAN, OF OENTRALIA, KANSAS.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,114, dated May 23, 1893. Apnlieatiou filed February 23, 1893. Serial No. 463,430. (No model.)
To (1% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. HARTMAN, of Oentralia, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'lhill-Oouplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in-.
vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in thill couplings; and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and especially referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device for holding the thill bolt in place which effectually disposes of the nut usually employed for this purpose.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a coupling having my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the same.
A designates the clip of the coupling and B, the forwardly extending perforated arms of the same, all of which are of ordinary construction. The thill bolt 0, is formed with an angular head D, but has no nut at its opposite end as is usually the case. A plate E, is extended longitudinally with the axle and beneath the clip A, where its end is turned up as at E, to hold it from outward movement. At the opposite end of the plate is the backwardly turned spring arm F which reaches to the bolt 0. A socket G, having angular sides is formed on its end, the outer side of the socket being open to allow it to slip over the bolt head D. The normal position of the spring arm is extended outward as shown in Fig. 1 with the said head resting in the socket G. The said arm may be easily pushed back against the axle when the bolt is to be inserted or withdrawn. By means of this device the bolt is held firmly in place and free from rotary movement.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a thill coupling, a bolt therefor, a plate extending outward from the coupling, and a backwardly turned spring arm secured thereto which at its end engages the said bolt, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a thill coupling, a bolt therefor, a plate extending laterally from the coupling a spring arm formed by turning backward the outer end of v the plate and which arm at its end is adapted to engage the said bolt, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of a thill coupling, a bolt therefor, a plate extending laterally from the coupling having its end turned to holdit from longitudinal movement and a spring arm formed by turning backward the outer end of the arm which is adapted to hold the bolt in position, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination of a thill coupling, a
bolt therefor having an angular head, a plate extending laterally from the thill coupling, a spring arm formed by turning backward the outer end of the plate, and a socket on the end of the arm for engaging the bolt head, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination of a thill coupling, a bolt therefor having an angular head, aplate extending laterally from the coupling, a spring arm formed by turning backward the outer end of the arm, and a socket havingits front side open for engaging the bolt head, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS M. I-IARTMAN.
