WALL-SOCKET FOR INCANDESCENT LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,849, dated May 23, 1893.
Application filed March '7, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT (J. WIRT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts,have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Wall-Sockets for Incandescent Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a wall socket for receiving and supportingincandescent electric lamps, and the object of the invention is to provide such a socket made of as few parts as possible, which consequently will be durable and cheaply manufactured.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan view of the socket. Fig. 2 isa bottom View, and Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view of the same.
The socket consists of an insulating support D, molded in a single piece, and usually made of glass or porcelain. The shape of this support is that best seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings, where it will be observed that it has a rear chamber B, the walls of which, E, have fiat outer ends adapted to rest upon the wall or ceiling of a room, or like support, and be secured thereto by screws, for which holes d are provided. The support has also a front chamber A, shaped to receive the neck of the lamp. To complete the lamp circuit, contacts P, P are provided, which are secured to the insulating base by screws or studs 6, and which extend out from the rear chamber through slots a, b,cut in the walls of the chamber, and terminate at their outer ends in clips 0, for receiving and making contact with the line wires Q. The insulating support has also a central partition R, separating the inner and outer chambers, and the contacts Phave their inner ends turned at a right angle forming offsets 'r, 0", which project through openings in the partition into the lamp chamber A. One of these offsets ris shown screw-threaded, while the other 1" has a smooth face. The lamp terminals will engage the offsets 1', r,

as is customary in the art, and one of them will consist of a screw-threaded ring which screws on to the offset '2", so that the lamp will thereby also be held in place in the socket.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wall socket for incandescent lamps consisting of a support of insulating material, having front and rear chambers separated by a web or partition forming a base, and contacts formed in a single piece extending through the partition and having at theirout-er ends Wire engaging clips to which the circuit wires are adapted to be readily connected, and their inner ends ending in terminals to which the lamp is attached and mechanically supported, and by which the lamp circuit is completed, as described.
2. A wall socket for incandescent lamps consisting of an insulating support having front and rear chambers A, B, and having the wall of the rear chamber slotted and contacts extending out through such slots and provided at their outer ends with external wire engaging clips, and having their inner ends extending into the lamp or frontchamber and supporting the lamp, as described.
3. A wall socket for incandescent lamps, consisting of an insulating support having a chamber B, the walls of which are slotted, as at a, b, and a chamber A shaped to receive the lamp, but separated from chamber B by a partition R, and contacts fitted in slots a, I), having external wire engaging clips at their outer ends, and at their inner ends offsets extending through the partition R into the lamp chamber, and there adapted to engage with the lamp terminals and support the lamp, as described.
