Description

E. LOCKWOOD.
Car-Axle Box.
No. 49,772. Patented Sept. 5, 1865.
lnventon Witnesses= UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN I OGKWOOD, OF BORDENTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED AXLE-BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,772, dated September 5, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN LocKwoon, of Bordentown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Axle-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my invention, taken in the line 00 m, Fig. 2 Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and efficient means for preventing the admission of dust, dirt, &c., into the rear end of the axle-box around the axle, thereby preventing the cutting and wearing of the axle by means of grit and hard foreign substances, which wouldotherwise work in between the axle and the bearing in the box.
At the rear end of the axle-box there is an elliptical flan ge, A, which forms a chamber, B, to receivea packing, O, and a plate, D, all of which are shown in Fig. 1.
The packing G is composed of two parts, E E, the part E forming the principal part of an ellipse and the part E the lower end, which completes the ellipse, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The part E is fixed or permanent, while the part E is movable or allowed to slide, and is graduated or adjusted by a screw, F, which passes through the lower part of the flange A.
The plate D, as well as the part E of the packing, and a collar, G, at the inner side of the latter, are secured in position by screwbolts H H. The plate D keeps the packing snugly in the chamber B, and as the part Eof the packing wears (as it will, of course, owing to the wear of the bearing in the box) the part E of the packing is adjusted upward. Thus it will be seen that the packing may always be kept in contact with the axle.
The packing may be constructed of leather or other suitable material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The construction and use of the packing (J,
