NUT-LOCK- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,589, dated May 16, 1893.

Be it known that 1, DAVID ALFRED MITCH- ELL, a citizen of London, Ontario, Canada, and a subject of the Queen of England, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in nut locks, and relates particularly to a device for fastening the nuts used upon railroad rails and may also be used for any other purpose where applicable. I
The object of the invention is the provision bolts and prevent them from turning under the strain to which they are subjected and which can be removed or detached when de sired to remove the nuts in order that neither the nuts nor the other parts of the device Will be injured.
To attain the desired object the invention consists of a device embodyingnovelfeatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts for service whereby a practical and economical nut lock is provided, as will appear from the following.
In order that the details of construction and the advantages gained by my device will be readily understood I have illustrated an embodiment of my improvements in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my novel nut lock applied for use. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 represents a detail perspective view of the parts of the device detached.
Referring by letter to the drawings,A designates a rail of the well known construction in connection with which my nut lock is employed and which consists broadly speaking of the base plate B and the upper or looking plate D. From this construction it will be seen that the base plate lies against the fish plate and that the two plates are securely retained togetherand that the tongue on the looking or upper plate is in line with the back of the base plate and the projections of the locking plate serve to firmly lock or fasten the nuts on the bolts. It will also be seen that the parts of the device can be de- I tached and the nuts removed if desired but that they cannot possibly become detached by reason of the hard usage. It will also be seen that the device is of simple and durable construction and that a road may be supplied with the device at a moderate cost and thus all matters considered the invention is practical and economical.
I am aware that it is old to make a nutlock of a base plate with-bolt openings and a bend or eye, a nut lock plate having bends or eyes and a pin passing through said eyes and such broad construction I do not claim.
I claim as my invention- The nut lock herein shown and described, consisting of the base plate having the bolt openings near each end, the intermediate elongated opening or slot and the bends or loops extending out oneach side of the slot, the locking plate having the upward locking extension at each end, having the slits and the inward extending bend fitting in the slot of the lower or base plate and the outward extending bends, the inward bend of the look-- ing plate entering and fitting closely in the slot of the base plate and the outer bends lying In testimony whereof I affix my signature in adjacent to the bends of the base plate and presence of two witnesses. together forming a round passage between the plates, and a round headed pin passing DAVID ALFRED MITCHELL 5 through the passage to lock the plates and Witnesses:
