NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BURNETT J. NOONAN, OF CHARLESTON, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,706, dated February 9,1875; applicamon led July 15,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURNETT J. NooNAN, of Charleston, in the county of Mississippi and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Holders and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being 'had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot' this specification.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved nutholder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Like letters in both figures ofthe drawings indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a bar arranged on the flange of the rail under the nuts of the bolts, to prevent their working' loose; and it consists in providing said bar with lugs having holes to receive keys or pins, and constructed so as to project down on the sides of the sleeper or cross-tie, in combination with screw-nuts and screw-bolts, having hooked heads made to clasp the ange of the rail, so that the said lugs will not only hold the bar to prevent it slipping endwise, but will also serve to secure the rail more firmly to the sleeper, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
A is the bar, provided with lugs D D, having holes to receive keys b b. The bar is placed on the ange or web B of the rail under the nuts a of the bolts, with each lug D projecting down on each side of the sleeper E.
O O are the screw-bolts, having hooked heads c e. Each bolt is passed through a hole in each lug, and the head of each bolt hooked onto, or made to clasp the flange of, the rail on the opposite side to the lug. The bolts are then made fast by the screw-nuts a a', which are prevented from working loose by the keys b b, inserted in holes in the lugs immediately under the nuts.
As the joint of the rail is made on the sleeper, it will be seen that the lugs, while they serve to hold the bar fast to the ilange of the rail, thus preventing it slipping endwise, also serve to secure the whole more firmly to the sleeper.
A spike, d, may be driven in the sleeper, with its head made to lap over on the bar.
I d0 not claim, broadly, a bar having turnedup ends, and placed on the flange of the rail under the nuts of the bolts to prevent their working loose, as I am aware that has been done before; but
What .I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
The bar A, provided with lugs D D, having holes to receive keys b b, and constructed so as to project. down on the sides of the sleeper E, in combination with screwnuts a a and screw-bolts O O, having hooked heads e c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the ibregoing as my own invention I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
