STOVE-CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,557, dated May 16, 1893.
Application filed February 3, 1893.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST H. SEYLLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stove-Casters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accoln panying drawings, andto letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for itsobject the providing of each stove leg with an adjustable caster, adapted to be lowered into operating position when it is desired to move the stove, and to be thrown up out of operation and permit the legs of the stove to rest upon the floor, or other supporting base, when it is desired that the stove remain stationary.
As shown in the drawings and described therein, my invention is applied to that class of stove legs which are connected to, or integral with the base of the stove; but it can be made equally applicable to removable stove legs, by simply drilling a vertical hole in the horizontal top of the latter, and a corresponding hole in the base of the stove, and inserting a short screw in such openings so as to attach the leg to the stove, and prevent any casual displacement of said leg while moving the stove upon the caster.
In my invention, the caster shank is pivoted laterally in the adjacent walls of the stove leg,-and is flexibly connected at its upper end, .by means of a strap or toggle, to a vertical lever, fulcrumed "about midway of the interior portion of the stove leg, said lever being adapted, by the movement of its upper end, to and from the stove, to throw the shank of the caster into a diagonal position, to permit the stove leg to rest upon the floor, or to throw said caster shank into nearly a vertical position, and to thereby cause the caster to project below the stove leg, and receive the weight of the stove in position for movement;

About one-third of the distance from the bottom of the leg A, on the inside of each wall thereof, there is formed ears B, between which is suitablyfulcru med the vertical lever O, the. upper end of which is slightly below the top of the leg, so as to have a freedom of oscillation in a line to and from the center of the stove.
Near the bottom of the leg A, and on the inner walls of the latter, are formed lugs D, to receive the socket of the shank F of the caster G. This socket consists of two half cylinders HH, having their inner concavities opposite and in position to embrace the shank F of the caster G.
On the exterior of the half cylinders H, and near the lower ends thereof, is formed, respectively, bosses J adapted to be seated in the holes E of lugs D, and thereby furnish the pivot, upon which the shank F is oscillated to and from the'center of the stove. At the upper ends of the cylinders H there is also formed exteriorly small bosses K, which are respectively inserted in the lower ends of two oppositely seated togglesL, the upper ends of which are pivoted upon opposite sides of the lowerend of the lever O by means of a transverse bolt M. The shank F is somewhat longer than the cylinders, and'projects suiticiently above them to permit of the placing of a washer N around said shank above said cylinders, and a transverse retaining pin P through said shank above said washer.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that, when the caster is in position for use, the shank thereof is thrown slightly beyond the perpendicular, and the lever C and toggles L operate to hold it in such position, and that when in the position of disuse, shown in Fig. 2, the same parts hold the caster suspended above the lower edge of the leg A.
The operation of my invention is as follows:-Assuming the stove to be resting upon the legs, by drawing the upper end of the lever 0 toward the center of the stove, said caster is gradually thrown down below the lower edge of the leg A, thereby taking the weight of that portion of the stove; and the same movement, either simultaneously or successivel y, of the levers seated in the otherlegs of the stove, results in raising the latter upon the casters, in position for ready movement. When the stove has been placed in the desired position, the caster wheels G are turned in line with the movement of the lever 0, when, by pushing the latter to the limit of its out stroke, the stove is lowered upon its legs.
The cars 13 and the lugs D can be cast integral with the leg A, and the residue of the parts may also be of cast or malleable iron The concavity of the leg A conceals substantially all of the operating devices, and the latter are always in position for immediate use.
While my invention, as shown in this application, is applicable to stove legs, it is obvious that it will be equally applicable to the legs of pianos, bureaus, secretaries, and other heavy furniture.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
1. The combination of the leg A. provided with ears B and lugs D, the lever Cfulcrumed in said ears, cylinders l-I pivoted in said lugs, caster G pivotally seated in said cylinders, toggles L flexibly connecting the upperends of said cylinders and the lower end of lever C; substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the leg A, provided with radial lugs D, the lever C, vertically fulcrumed, radially, in said leg, cylinders H, pivotally seated, near their lower ends, in said lugs, and flexibly connected, at their upper ends, to the lower end of said lever, and the caster G, pivotally seated in said cylinders, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
