Description

DOUBLE LEVER SWING? No.-497,258. I .Patented May 9,1893.
BY 1 Wm ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. WILCOX, OF RIDGWAY, COLORADO.
DOUBLE LEVER-SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,258, dated May 9, 1893.
' Application filed December 10, 1892. Serial N0f4354180 l (No model.)
1'0 all whom may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. WILooX,
a citizen of the United States of America, re
siding at Ridgway, in the county of Ouray and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Lever-Swings; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in swings of the lever class, and the object of the invention is to provide a double swing of the class stated wherein the occupants sit facing each other.
The invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed and will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which isillustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the swing. Fig. 2 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale showing the suspension rods partly broken away. Fig. 3 shows a detail of construction on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is another view of the same.
Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts or elements of the mechanism in the several views let the numeral 5 designate each of four arms constituting two pairs, connected with the suspension cords or rods 6, which are inclined inwardly from their points of attachment to the levers, toward their points of attachment to the overhead support. The extremities of these arms on corresponding opposite sides are connected by the hand bars 7, while each two arms on the same side are rigidly connected at 8. The double seat 9 is suspended from the arms 5 by cords or rods 10. Those occupying the opposite sides 9" of the seat grasp the hand bars '7, and while those on one side push, the
others pull, and by a series of alternate pushes and pulls the seat oscillates by reason of the fact that the weight is alternately shifted from one pair of suspension cords or rods to the other, the movement being in accordance with the natural law that a suspended object left to itself will seek a position wherein the center of gravity is in the same perpendicular line with the point from which the body is suspended. It will thus be seen that by rnanipulating the levers, as described, one pair of ropes is made slack, whereby the weight of the swing body and the occupants thereof, is thrown upon the other pair of ropes which by means of their inclination from the suspended weight inwardly toward the over head support, swing to a perpendicular. The arms may be provided with extensions 5 provided with apertures 5, the one directly above the other when the swing is in use. The suspension cords 6 and 10 are provided with links o and 10 respectively having their extremities pivoted in said apertures.
Having, thus described my invention, wh..t I claim is- In a double swing, the combination of two levers, one on each side of the swing, the levers being provided with depending arms,
projecting inwardly from the suspension ropes, each pair of arms of the two levers being'connected by a hand piece, suspension ropes attached to the levers, the two ropes on the same side being inclined toward each other from their points of attachment to the levers to their points of attachment to the over head support, and a double seat composed of two sides adapted to accommodate persons facing each other and in position to manipulate the levers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
